Outlander: Sam Heughan confirms ANOTHER huge wait for season 6

It’s now been more than a year since it was revealed that Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) had been ordered to kill his own godfather by the virulent Governor Tyron (Tim Downie). The conflict set up the major thrust for Starz’ upcoming season which is now just weeks away from its premiere. However, for Outlander fans already anticipating what season six could hold, it looks like they’re in for another long wait.

Jaimie Fraser’s loyalties are currently caught between two warring factions as the American Revolution picks up steam.

Actor Sam recently spoke to Digital Spy about whether fans should expect a similar wait between seasons five and six, and confessed that he’s found hiatuses between production rewarding.

Sam explained: “It almost came to five-six months [last year]. I’m not sure the exact dates at the moment, but I think it might be the same.”

The actor then joked: “There will be a Droughtlander but they can go see my movies.”

Droughtlander was an affectionate moniker invented by Outlander fans during the longer than usual wait between season four and five.

Unfortunately, episodes of the time-travelling romantic adventure are likely to dry up again.

A sixth season is most definitely coming out, but no release date has yet been set and production isn’t likely to start for the next few months.

The wait will prove an endurance test for eager fans, especially if the twists in the next season finale are anything near as mind-blowing as season four’s.

In his recent interview, Sam explained: “I’ve been doing [Outlander] for six years now and so it’s good to go and stretch myself and try new things.”

As well as Sam and his co-star Caitriona Balfe taking up producing roles for upcoming seasons, the longer production has allowed Sam to explore additional passion projects that his starring duties previously got in the way of.

The Highland star will be directing and starring in Clan Lands, a TV adaptation of his podcast series that he created with his co-star Graham McTavish.

Sam added: “It’s basically a buddy road trip around Scotland and we’re exploring the clans, we’re exploring Scotland and the culture.

He explained: “It’s a little silly, it’s a lot of fun. Hopefully, people will learn stuff as well. We went for a really strong visual aspect so it should look amazing. And there’s a lot of music in there as well.”

So, fans shouldn’t be too disheartened that longer waits between Outlander seasons are becoming the norm.

Despite the hiatus, there’s plenty more Sam Heughan content to look forward to, and Clan Lands sounds like the perfect buffer for fans who are missing the rolling landscapes of the Starz drama.

Outlander season 5 premieres February 16 on STARZ and February 17 on Amazon Prime Video UK.
