Philippe Coutinho transfer saga hurts Liverpool, but don’t blame Barcelona – Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool’s preparations for matches this season have frequently been disrupted by Barcelona’s relentless pursuit of the Brazil international.

The Reds remain defiant about not selling the attacking midfielder to the Catalan club and will reject a fourth bid for the player should Barca try again.

Coutinho remains eager to make the switch to the Nou Camp but with less than a week of the transfer window remaining hopes of a deal are dwindling.

Ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal, Klopp suggested it has been a particularly stressful period for him.

“I’m not sure there was one easy day since we started pre-season, maybe the first day,” said Klopp. “It was so long ago. Always something changes. All the discussions about Phil and then in the same moment Adam Lallana gets injured. It was like, ‘What?!’

“I don’t think anyone can expect that we are prepared for a season like this.”

Barcelona have been public about their pursuit of Coutinho with players and officials happy to comment on developments.

Liverpool told Barcelona not to call them again after they rejected a third bid of £119million for Coutinho.

But despite their behaviour Klopp took a dignified stance and would not criticise Barca’s approach.

“I don’t judge what other clubs are doing,” he said. “To be disappointed about different things, you need to have expectations. I don’t have expectations, I don’t think about other clubs to be honest.

“We all have our own problems. If we think we have to do something, we do it. In this moment, I would have preferred we finished our business six weeks ago. Let all the rest of the world do what they do. It’s getting more and more different and difficult.”

Coutinho is struggling with a back injury and illness and will miss Liverpool’s game with Arsenal on Sunday.

The 25-year-old will still join up with the Brazil squad during the international break but Klopp doubts he will be fit enough to play.

“If he goes there and can train, I don’t think he can, but they will decide,” added the German. “It’s in the hands of the specific FA. They make their own decisions. Are we always happy with things like that? No, not always in the past.

“Sometimes players come back after a small injury, go to their national team and play two games. It’s the same procedure as always.”

Klopp also claimed that his Liverpool team can go on to reach new heights now that they have qualified for the Champions League group stage.

“Since I came in Oct 2015 we created in this build an atmosphere that is extremely special. We feel the power of this club,” said Klopp.

“We need to show up all the time and be part of the Champions’ League and if that is no sign, then I don’t understand what a sign is. For all of us it builds confidence.”
