Chris Evans: 'Quite bad' Virgin Radio Breakfast host explains ‘traumatic’ health issue

Chris Evans, 52, regularly shares updates on his day-to-day life with his Virgin Radio Breakfast listeners and yesterday, the radio host spoke about having varicose veins. They are swollen and enlarged veins which usually occur on the legs and feet, according to the NHS.

It says symptoms include aching, heavy and uncomfortable legs, swollen feet and ankles, burning or throbbing, muscle cramp in your legs, dry itchy and thin skin over the affected vein.

The former BBC Radio 2 presenter said he had both of his legs done at one time.

“You know I had my varicose veins done a couple of weeks ago, it was two weeks yesterday I had them done,” he spilled.

“I had both legs done, they were quite bad,” he said, referring to his doctor, Chris added: “He said not as quite as bad as you get but probably a 9 out of 10.”

The star went on: “He sorted mine out, did both legs in one day, which doesn’t happen very often, it’s quite traumatic to have both done in one day.”

Chris said it was “fine” and far “less uncomfortable” than he originally though.

“We did it, got through it, it was fine, it was a lot less uncomfortable than I thought it was gong to be.”

Chris explained he wasn’t able to run or “shuffle” for a couple of weeks following the procedure.

However, the radio favourite admitted he became “emotional” after being able to run again.

“Yesterday, I gave it a go, I ran before the show and ran again before the show,” he said.

“I have to say, I feel like I’ve got new legs.”

Chris went on: “I was getting emotional about it running on the way in, thank you, thank you, Mark.”

Revealing how much it’s changed his life, he said: “It’s honestly like getting an old car which hasn’t turned over for three years and giving it all the love and attention, change the plugs, sort out the tyres, re-tune , off you go flying like you never did before…”

Chris added: “Obviously I’m not flying because I’m 52 and not very fast but my legs feel better than they did before than when I ran my first marathon.”

The star further praised: “I’m so grateful, thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Meanwhile, Chris gifted Holly Willoughby £20,000 to donate her chosen charity last week.

Announcing the news on Instagram, Holly wrote: “So far #chrisevans has raised 16.5 million pounds for children’s charities from his @carfest2020.

“That’s an incredible amount of money and something he should be very proud of… then today he came on @thismorning and gave me £20 thousand pounds to give to a children’s charity of my choice.”

Holly continued: “That’s easy… as Patron of @togetherforshortlives this money will go to help families of children with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition get the very best care and support they can so they can make the most of every moment together… Thank you Chris that was unbelievably generous.”

Chris Evans’ Virgin Radio Breakfast show airs weekdays from 6.30am.
