Billy Joe Saunders beats Marcelo Esteban Coceres with 11th-round KO to retain world title

Saunders started the first round on the front foot and produced aggression that he usually reserves for the later stages of his fights.

Normally the type to download data, sit back and wait for his oppose too come to him, the start surprised Coceres, who was backed into the corner int he opening few minutes.

From his patented southpaw stance, Saunders hit the Argentine with some nice shots toward the end of the first before containing the same work in the second.

Saunders looked to crank up the pressure in the third but it was clear the Brit was fighting out of his usual style, with Coceres using the more reactive stance.

Not naturally a pressure fighter, saunders gave up the odd shot to Coceres, whose confidence grew as the fourth round began.

A third of the way through the first and a little bit of controversy came as Saunders hit Coceres a little low and as the referee tried to separate the pair – Saunders lashed out again.

A disqualification wanting was given to Saunders, who ended the round on the back foot and with his elbows up against the ropes.

Coceres began the fifth with confidence but Saunders began to land crisp shots, while bobbing and weaving through his opponents arrowed punches.

Through the sixth and seventh, Coceres’ work-rate was there for all to see, but Saunders could still be seen to land the classier, harder and cleaner shots.

A stiff body shot landed on Coceres halfway through the seventh which briefly stunned him and as round eight began, Saunders’ temp upped some more.

Coming into the ninth, you wouldn’t be wrong to have judged Saunders’ performance as sluggish. Coceres hit some nice shots during the round and dropped his hands just like the WBO champ had earlier in the fight.

In the 11th, Saunders began to pick his best shots and with a crunching body shot, Coceres went down in a heap before getting up on the count of nine.

But with seconds to go, Saunders smashed a huge uppercut into Coceres chin and stumbled the Argentine back to the canvas again.

Coceres rose again but just a few punches later he was back on his backside again, forcing the referee to wave the bout off.

Saunders looked relieved to see the back of his opponent as he stood back in his corner with trainer Dominic Ingle behind him.

Saunders will now angle for a big-money clash with Canelo Alvarez, who beat Sergey Kovalev last week in Las Vegas with an 11th-round knockout himself.
