Freddie wrote Love Of My Life for Mary and meant every single word. Not only when he wrote the song, but until his final, devoted breath. He didn’t just love her because they had been a couple, for him it went far beyond that. Even so, he once admitted he planned to leave everything to her when he was gone for another very important reason.
Freddie said: “If I dropped dead tomorrow, she’s the one person I know who could cope with my vast wealth.”
Except, many years after Freddie’s death, Mary revealed how much of a burden it had been, leaving her paranoid and unable to sleep – and under attack from many who thought she did not deserve to receive so much. And openly told her so.
Mary said the “jealousy” of other people who had been in Freddie’s circle “hit like a bullet train.”
“Some of the fans even told me I was only the keeper of the house. That hurt. I know several of Freddie’s gay friends were surprised Freddie had left so much to me. There those who thought they should have been left the house. It was like people begrudged me having what he had left me.”

“I had sleepless nights worrying about everything. I felt as if I’d done something wrong and paranoia set in.”
It was also another eight years before Mary received the bulk of his money from the will and she said: “It was a worrying time. The taxman had been paid, but without the money coming through I didn’t know if I could afford to keep the house. I felt under a lot of pressure.”
