Dimitar Berbatov makes Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo claim to underline Man Utd woes

Manchester United still wouldn’t be able to turn their fortunes around if they signed Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

That’s according to club legend Dimitar Berbatov.

Man Utd have endured a torrid start to the season, having won just twice in eight games.

They are currently 12th in the table, without a win in their last 11 games in all competitions – an unwanted record stretching back to 1989.

United’s problems are mainly in the striker position, having sold Romelu Lukaku without a replacement, Marcus Rashford has been forced to play as an out-and-out striker with little support.

The youngster has been impressive in flashes, but has not got an understudy at Old Trafford, as Anthony Martial is currently recovering from injury.

And Berbatov believes that the club is in such a bad condition that even signing Messi or Ronaldo wouldn’t help solve their problems.

“When you sell two of your main strikers you need to bring in at least one, just in case,” the Bulgarian told Betfair.

“Everybody can see that Manchester United need a back-up.

“Anthony Martial is injured and there isn’t another really strong proven goalscorer.

“The winter transfer window is difficult and also on the pitch Manchester United aren’t producing as a team at the moment.

“It doesn’t matter how good you are, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo could go there, and they would have difficulty because the team is not producing as a team.”

United are keen to sign a striker in the January transfer window, and have apparently targeted AC Milan forward Krzysztof Piatek and Lyon goalscorer Moussa Dembele.

Piatek has started the season well, with two goals in seven Serie A games, and has garnered interest from Chelsea, too.

However, with Tammy Abraham currently firing on all cylinders, it is unlikely that the Blues will look to spend big on the Pole next summer when their transfer embargo is lifted.

Dembele, on the other hand, has reportedly expressed an interest in heading to Old Trafford in January.

The France international has scored six goals in eight Ligue 1 games this term, and is open to joining United according to Duncan Castles.
