One pound coin: Common design could net you a fortune – is it in YOUR wallet?

The Royal Arms is one of the most recognisable designs seen on sterling in the UK.

It was issued in 1983, and went through four further re-issues.

But there is one in particular that is worth significantly more than one pound.

The 2008 version is the third rarest of all one pound coins, with 3.9million made.

And thanks to its rarity, 2008 Royal Arms one pound coins can fetch up to £15 on eBay.

This particular coin is not the only one to be worth much more than it’s face value.

Some new £1 have been minted with minor errors, and these are going for a lot of money online.

The Sun reported flawed new £1 coins selling for as much as £300 online.

Check the coin to see whether the colours of the gold and silver have bled or whether the crown or any other part of the Queen has been stamped outside of the silver area.

Similarly, trial £1 coins, fakes which were released to shops before the currency change, can go for hundreds.

They are not legal tender, but the ‘uncirculated’ coins have sold online for £200.

And it isn’t just £1 coins, as smaller tender could also be worth a fortune.

The Olympic Swimmer 50p is one of the most expensive rare coins you can find as a tiny amount were minted.

Only 600 were released into currency, meaning they are highly sought after and can go for £800.

And a 20p without a date could fetch you quite a sum of money.

Around 250,000 were minted in 2008 and can fetch £100 on the internet.
