Bank Holiday CANCELLED: Barnier demands Brexit talks with Davis on Monday

Both the UK and the ’s chief Brexit negotiators hope to quicken the pace of talks over fears there will not be “sufficient progress” by the October deadline.

Earlier this month, Mr Barnier warned the chances of progressing to the next stage are diminishing – and insisted talks must “intensify” if progress is to be made.

And it has now been revealed that as many other Britons enjoy their summer bank holiday on Monday, Secretary David Davis is likely to miss out.

The top Tory, who is not known for working overtime, is expected to get stuck in with talks in Brussels instead of enjoying the last public holiday in Britain.

According to Politico, both British and EU officials think negotiations will start on Monday – although it is not clear whether this has been agreed by both sides.

And Mr Barnier will no doubt point out he worked on Bastille Day if Mr Davis refuses to meet.

The news comes after Mr Davis’ former chief of staff launched a series of Twitter tirades, accusing the Brexit secretary of laziness.
