Galaxy S10 may soon look outdated as new rival could be revealed today

UPDATE ONE: OPPO has revealed its new technology that allows for a front-facing camera to be housed underneath a phone’s display.

The phone allowed media to get hands-on with the new technology at its MWC Shanghai showcase.

Photos of the smartphone showcasing the functionality were taken by Engadget; at some angles it appeared the camera system could be seen through the display.

OPPO claimed the selfie sensor being used to achieve the feat is larger than on most other smartphones.

Furthermore, the tech giant has claimed display quality should not be impacted by the tech, nor should overall camera quality.

The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.

OPPO has declared it plans to release a new phone showcasing the technology “in the near future”.

Unfortunately, no more details about such a handset were revealed.

ORIGINAL STORY: Galaxy S10 is Samsung’s most premium flagship; the device comes in a total of four models that vary in features, price and form factor.

One commonality between the quartet is the fact each comes with a cutout within its all-screen display to expose each’s respective front-facing camera system.

The standard Galaxy S10 and S10e come with a single selfie snapper, meaning the hole punch is relatively small.

However, other S10 units such as the S10+ and S10 5G feature a two front cameras, meaning they have a pill-shaped hole within their panels.

While Samsung’s design is currently one of the most effective ways to provide users with an all-screen design without having to harness motorised pop-up cameras, it could soon look outdated.

That is because Chinese manufacturer OPPO has teased the reveal of a smartphone that hides its front-facing sensor underneath its display without the need for a hole.

At the start of this month the OEM took to Twitter to exhibit a new handset that harnessed what it dubbed “under-display selfie camera technology”.

A video accompanied the tweet and appeared to show a smartphone with a screen taking up the entirely of its front panel.

A user was shown navigating the user interface; the phone showed no signs of having a sensor housed underneath its screen.

However, when the camera app was opened, a glowing circle highlighted an area at the top of the phone’s display, showing the position of the phone’s selfie snapper.

The portion of the screen at the top turned black and the phone was shown to be capable of taking front snaps similar to any other smartphone on the market.

Since the initial tease, the firm has released a promotional film hinting its new futuristic smartphone could be shown off today at its planned showcase at Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai.

At the end of the clip a slogan “more than the seen” was displayed, suggesting OPPO is planning to discuss its new technology in further detail.

If the Chinese tech giant does show off a new smartphone with a front-facing camera hidden underneath its display, it could make Samsung’s Galaxy S10 series look outdated.

OPPO’s event in Shanghai is starting today at 6am – Express.co.uk will be updating this page with any announcements that are made.
