INTERVIEW: Motorhead on recording their final album Under Cover with Lemmy

In a career that lasted over forty-years, Motorhead achieved substantial success and longevity by developing their own unique Metal sound.

Fronted by the legendary rock icon Lemmy – who sadly passed away in 2015 – Under Cover is a compilation of Motorhead’s favourite songs by other artists.

The album includes the final recordings the band made prior to Lemmy’s death.

One of the final songs that the band recorded together was a version of David Bowie’s Heroes.

Talking exclusively toΒ , the surviving Motorhead members Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell reveal how this album came together.

Guitarist Campbell said: “It’s such a great Bowie song, one of his best, and I could only see great things coming out of it from us and so it proved to be.”

Drummer Mikkey Dee chipped in: “Lemmy was very, very proud of it, not only because it turned out so well but it was fun to record, too.”

Campbell added: “Lemmy ended up loving our version of Heroes.”

As well as Heroes, the album contains loud and proud versions of timeless Rock and Punk classics: God Save The Queen (Sex Pistols), Rockaway Beach(The Ramones), Breaking The Law (Judas Priest), Sympathy For The Devil (The Rolling Stones) and Whiplash (Metallica) to name just a few.

Campbell reveals: “We were happy with recording them at the time and we’re happy with them now.”

Dee agrees: “We should remember that it’s about having some fun with songs that we all loved. Which is what projects like this should be – fun!”

One thing that that both Phil and Mikkey agree upon is that they would rather celebrate Lemmy’s life than mourn his death.

What Motorhead liked to do during their career was to grab a favourite song, by another artist, and give it a good old fashioned ‘Motorheading’.

And this collection of covers – recorded over a period from 1992 – 2015 – Β is a testament to that ethic and a fine epitaph to this much-loved UK Metal band.

Since Lemmy’s death, Mikkey Dee has joined legendary German rockers Scorpions and Phil Campbell is recording and touring with his own band.

Under Cover is released on September 4th.
