Vikings season 5 spoilers: Star hints at brutal Bjorn death after shock finale trailer

With Viking season five concluding later this week, lead actor Alexander Ludwig has let slip the potential fate of his character Bjorn.

The 26-year-old actor admitted he is “nervous” about the future of the eldest son of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick).

In a tantalising new trailer for the finale episode, Bjorn is seen bloodied and laying on the ground in the battlefield.

During the fight, Olaf’s (Steven Berkoff) voice can be heard shouting: “Once more brother will fight against brother and the world will be wrecked.”

Screaming at his men to prepare them for combat, Bjorn is seen with his iconic white stripes across his face.

But in the next sequence his brother Ivar The Boneless (Alex Hogh Andersen) is shown issuing orders to his followers.

“My brother you’ve come too late – burn them alive,” he sneered, before breaking out into an evil laugh as flames engulfed the rival men.

After, he spat: “When I tell you to kill them, you kill them.”

In the final moments, Bjorn is seen lying on the floor, screaming as his brother looks on – does this mean Bjorn will die?

Of his death, Bjorn actor Alexander revealed: “As the show progressed and we started getting farther and farther away from the historical accuracy of it all, everyone got more nerves about it.”

He went on to tell TV Junkie: “For me, if he goes, I want it to be memorable and for a good reason. I think Michael [Hirst] obviously shares that same thought as me.”

The TV star added: “Whether or not I go isn’t so much of a fear for me, but my biggest fear would be not doing the character and fans justice.

“However, I know that with Michael we are in the greatest hands so I’m not worried.”

Since the release of the dramatic new trailer, fans have been debating how the season could end on social media.

On Twitter, one person said: “Killing Ragnar was a bad decision. Now you can make it right by finally killing off Ivar because he’s ruining the show.”

Another person tweeted: “Team Bjorn, gather here let’s pray to Odin for Bjorn and Hvitserk to win this battle.. all father, Odin, please hear our prayers, for the sake of Ragnar and his legacies, keep Bjorn, protect him and let him be victorious, this we pray Odin.”

A third commentator shared: “Something bad is gonna happen and I’m not ready,” while a another said: “If Ivar doesn’t die, then I won’t be pleased.”

Someone else added: “After Ragnar, I believe Bjorn is the finest Viking and leader. I can’t see him losing.”

A poll amongst the thread of comments, created by a fan asked ‘who will win the battle?’ and a staggering 75 per cent of 115 votes suggested Bjorn would be victorious.

Vikings season 5 finale airs Wednesday January 30 on History and Thursday January 31 on Amazon Prime.
