During Munich’s beer festival, Oktoberfest, Maya celebrated her 60th birthday in October last year, with guests Bill and Hilary Clinton, as well as Hollywood royalty.
“The Clintons and Hollywood Royals would have been arm in arm with ‘Normalos’, youth friends from Bonn,” Alexander explained.
Admiring his sister’s strength, he added: “If I have only mild discomfort in my left nostril, I’ll retire to a quiet corner and suffer.
“Maya was different, when she was really ill she threw a party, she knew she had only a few weeks to live.”
On Instagram, Maya’s son, Alex Flick confirmed her death, writing: “Yesterday, Sunday 17.01.19 at 12:05 Maya (60) my mother, passed out of this world and into another.
“After 6 hard years of battling cancer, her breathing became gentler, her eyes closed and she slipped away peacefully.
“Mama, you where the most important person in my life. You bore me, raised me, taught me, understood me and forgave me.
“You showed me grace, humility, humour, bravery, strength and how to overcome setbacks, laugh at myself and even love in moments of injustice.”
He added: “The sadness I feel now is incomparable to anything I have ever felt before, my heart cut by a spear.”
Meanwhile, fashion designer Diane Prinzessin zu Fürstenberg paid tribute to the German countess on her account.
In a heartfelt post, she penned: “Good bye dearest Maya… you were a fearless angel and a force of nature!
“Your spirit will continue to bring strength to all your loved ones!”
Born in 1958, Maya had three siblings and a half-sister, she was married from 1985 to 1993 to billionaire Friedrich.
She and Friedrich had three children together, two sons and a daughter. She also had a child with partner Stefan Hipp.
