James Bond 25: Does THIS prove Daniel Craig’s latest will have a female director?

Over the last half a century there has been 24 official movies, all with male directors.

However, could Craig’s fifth and final film as 007 be directed by a woman for the first time?

This is something producer Barbara Broccoli certainly has in the pipeline.

In an interview with Screen Daily for her new non-Bond movie, Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, she was asked if she would consider a female filmmaker for a future Bond outing.

Broccoli replied: “Of course. There are a lot of women working on this production [Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool], which pleases me very much.

“It’s incredibly important to support a change in front of and behind the camera. I love working with women. It’s a different vibe. We have to promote women within the industry.

“Women are often tasked with taking care of children and ailing parents, so it’s hard for some women to sustain a career in this industry.

“We have to be more family-friendly, with childcare, flexible hours and job shares. At Eon, we have a lot of women doing job sharing and it’s easy with technology.”

So which female directors could be in the pipeline for Bond 25 or beyond?

Two that certainly come to mind from the action genre are The Hurt Locker’s Kathryn Bigelow and Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins.

Nevertheless three male directors have been tipped for Craig’s final outing, with Yann Demange as the frontrunner, so it could be a long wait for a woman to helm 007.

James Bond 25 will be released in UK cinemas in November 2019.
