Meet the iPhone X
Apple’s newest iPhone is the “iPhone X” (pronounced “iPhone Ten”). With a new and powerful face-scanning camera and an edge-to-edge display that ditches the home button altogether, Apple is calling it the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone ten years ago. Tim Cook and Phil Schiller introduced the iPhone X, leading off with the striking, edge-to-edge display. Look closely, and you’ll notice that there’s no longer a home button. You just tap the screen to wake it up, or swipe up to go home.
The front-facing camera got a major upgrade for the iPhone X, complete with ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, infrared camera, and a dot projector for facial mapping.
With that powerful new camera on the front, the iPhone X can map out your face, remember it, and then use it to identify you when you’re unlocking the phone or buying something using Apple Pay. Apple says that it’s even more secure than the fingerprint-scanning Touch ID.
You can also take selfies in Portrait Mode now for blurred out, bokeh-style backgrounds. A new feature called “Portrait Lighting” is available in the front-facing camera, too.
The iPhone X will be Apple’s most expensive iPhone to date, starting at $999. You’ll be able to pre-order one on October 27th ahead of an expected arrival on November 3rd. Your two color options are Silver and Space Grey (sorry, Rose Gold aficionados).
