Rafael Nadal opens up on injury problems and reveals comeback plans

Nadal did not compete at the end of the season with his last match being the end of his US Open title defence.

That saw him retire against Juan Martin del Potro in New York with a knee injury.

Then in November while Rafael Nadal was recovering from an abdominal injury, he underwent surgery on his ankle.

That kept him out of the ATP Tour Finals in London, won by Alexander Zverev, though the Spaniard will end the year ranked No 2 in the world.

It comes following a season where he won a record 11th French Open as well as reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open.

“I am making a lot of steps forward since the surgery on the foot,” Nadal told CNN.

“I started practising tennis one week earlier, and in higher intensity than we had thought.

“It was a little bit of risk that we don’t make it into the beginning of the season, but here we are, practicing more or less hard and we are excited to start the new season.

“Being honest, we are having a better off-season than last year.

“Last year, I finished the year very bad with my knees.

“I enjoy the fact that for me, it’s a challenge, always, to be back again after a tough period of time because of injuries.

“For me, it’s a challenge to start a new season.

“We try things and we work on new things. And at the end of the day, you need to go on court every day with the passion to improve something, and with the motivation to keep on going.”

Nadal is set to continue his warm up for the 2019 season at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship next week.

Novak Djokovic is also due to play with the two potentially meeting in teh final of the exhibition event.
