Speaking in the pre-fight coverage, he offered up an opinion as to why Wilder lacks the kind of popularity in the US heavyweight rival Anthony Joshua commands in the UK.

He said: “He’s impressed me with the fact as soon as he hits somebody he takes them out. 

“He doesn’t give them any breathing space, he jumps right on top of them. 

“I think a lot of people want to see a lot more out of him. They want to see him a lot better technically. 

“They want to see him up against better opponents. Until they see that, that’s when they’re really going to jump behind him. 

“They’re really listening to him right now and thinking, ‘He’s just another big mouth guy.’ But he does say things that come true. 

“If he says he’s going to knock you out, usually that’s the case. But I say not everybody you can knock out and if you can’t knock them out you better be able to box.”

02:00. Tyson Fury will be looking to follow in the footsteps of the last undisputed heavyweight champion when he takes to the ring tonight.

That’s because Lennox Lewis – who held all the titles in 2000, the last man to do so – won more fights in America than any other British boxer during Fury’s lifetime, Grosvenor Sports have found.

Between 1993 and 2003, Lewis had 15 fights across the pond and won all but one – a draw with Evander Holyfield. That marks an impressive 93 per-cent win ratio.

Fury has fought once on American soil before, beating Steve Cunningham in New York in April 2013, but this is his first title showdown in the States.

Grosvenor Sport‘s Head of Sport Steve Munns said: “This is the one that boxing fans have been waiting for. This will be the first real test for Tyson Fury since his return to the ring, and they don’t come much bigger than Deontay Wilder.

“Of the top-10 boxers who have had most title contests in the USA during this period, they have a 71% win rate. While this bodes well for the Gypsy King, he’ll need to be at his best to overcome Wilder. 

“Both boxers are unbeaten in their careers so far, but our Wilder v Fury fight predictor shows that 47.5% of Wilder’s wins come in the first round. The majority of Fury’s victories come in the twelfth round, so it could be his night if it goes the distance. That said, we make Wilder favourite for this one at 4/7.”

01:30. But the prediction most people want to hear is Anthony Joshua’s.

The 29-year-old holds all the other heavyweight belts not on offer in tonight’s LA bout and could face the winner of Wilder vs Fury in a blockbuster fight in 2019.

At least, that’s the hope of boxing fans – with Joshua’s division unification contest against Wilder having long been in the making. The two sides, however, have been unable to reach an agreement financially.

Anyway – to the prediction…

Watford-born big-hitter Joshua said to William Hill: “Definitely Wilder. When I fought Klistchko he had 16 to 17 months off because Fury got injured and had to pull out of his fight so he had a long period off.

“He said it done him well because he was training in between (fights), he had revitalised his body – he’d been doing it for so long, took himself out of the box, freshened up. He trained and kept his body active and then he had a fight with me.

“But due to the fact that I was probably active while he was waiting to fight Fury, I managed to get the stoppage in the 11th round. That activeness plays a big part in boxing. So then you’ve got Fury who had a long lay-off, wasn’t trying as he (did) the opposite, and now he’s going to fight a championship fighter.

“The proof’s in the pudding and history only teaches us that it will repeat itself, so I think that Fury will lose, Wilder will win and providing there’s no rematch contract there would be no reason for us not to fight.”

01:00. Tyson Fury’s young trainer Ben Davison has been speaking to the BT Sport cameras, and he thinks the Briton will edge it psychologically.

“I think that the difference between these two fighters will be that Tyson is at an elite level mentally. 

“Like I say I think that will be the difference. Tyson’s good, supremely confident, supremely relaxed.

“I predict a late Tyson Fury stoppage. But Deontay is a formidable challenge.

“He’s a fantastic fighter. It’ll be a great fight.”

00:30. Deontay Wilder – with 40 wins, 39 knockouts – is the strong favourites with the bookmakers tonight.

But not for one man.

And that’s boxing legend Mike Tyson – who thinks Tyson Fury has what it takes to down his compatriot because of his mental battles outside of the ring over the last few years.

Former undisputed world champion Tyson said: 

Although Wilder’s punch is strong, nothing can compare to the mental strength Fury has shown, both in and out of the ring,” Tyson said.

“It’ll be a close call, but I think Fury’s got a true fighting chance.”

23:45. It certainly isn’t going to be easy for Fury, however.

He faces a man who has 39 knock-outs in 40 wins and has defended his WBC strap eight times already, including last against Luis Ortiz in New York back in March.

The American’s punching power is renowned – particularly in his right hand.

The 33-year-old’s trainer Jay Deas told Sky Sports earlier this year: “Most of it is God-given. One guy hits someone and something happens – another guy hits someone and nothing happens.”

And in the aftermath of his win over Ortiz, he also warned: “His left hand is very strong with the hook but he hasn’t had the opportunity [to use it in a fight]. Deontay has a tremendous uppercut on the inside – that was the punch he ended the Ortiz fight with. He also has a tremendous left hook on the inside, and a left uppercut but he hasn’t had a chance to show it yet.”

23:30. It’s been some ride for Fury over the last year. He’s had a 30-month layoff since downing Klitschko in Dusseldorf back in November 2015.

That time away has seen him battle severe depression, drug and drink problems and a two-year UK Anti-Doping ban.

But here he is. The 30-year-old, having admitted he contemplated suicide during the lowest of his lows, could help set up an all-British showdown with Anthony Joshua if he takes the only heavyweight belt he has yet to win.

If he was to do that, his comeback would surely rank among the best in the sport’s history alongside Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard.

The night is finally here as Tyson Fury makes his grand return to the ring in Los Angeles where he faces WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder at Staples Center, home of NBA teams the Los Angeles Lakers and LA Clippers.

The pair are expected to step in the ring and get underway around 5am UK time but until then we’ll have plenty of build-up as Fury looks to repeat the upset of his win over Wladimir Klitschko three years ago.

Much has happened for Fury since then, but having lost 10st in the last 12 months or so, the Gypsy King is back in shape and looking to take down heavy-weight specialist Wilder and end his 40-fight unbeaten run.
