‘Liverpool have been rubbish, they need to improve’ – Robbie Fowler’s no-nonsense verdict

The Reds have lost both of their away fixtures in this year’s Champions League, though they have won two European fixtures at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have suffered 1-0 and 2-0 defeats to Napoli and Red Star Belgrade, the latter of which delayed their progression to the last 16 of the tournament.

The Merseysiders’ next European outing will see them take on French champions Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night.

And ahead of the clash with the Parisians, Fowler has claimed his former club have been poor away from home in Europe’s elite club competition.

“It’s not absolutely vital (beating PSG on Wednesday),” Fowler said in his Daily Mirror column.

“They can still qualify if they lose, but then beat Napoli.

“Yet, for many reasons, getting something against PSG would be a massive lift for the Reds – not least because they have been rubbish away from home in Europe so far this season!”

Liverpool’s chances of getting a positive result in the French capital could be boosted if Neymar and Kylian Mbappe miss Wednesday’s match.

The pair missed Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Toulouse with thigh and shoulder injuries respectively.

Both men will have their fitness assessed on Monday.

“Both Neymar and Kylian Mbappe are still doubts for the game – and that can only be good for Liverpool,” Fowler added. “Say what you like about Neymar and his diving, but he IS their team and, without him, I’d fancy my old club.”

Liverpool’s poor form away from home in the Champions League this season is in stark contrast to last year, when they beat Porto and Manchester City on the road to reaching their ninth European Cup final.

Fowler is concerned by the dip in form and believes Klopp’s troops need to show a marked improvement on Wednesday night if they’re going to leave Paris any points.

“They need to improve a lot on their performances in Napoli and Belgrade, though,” he said.

“I don’t know what happened with them, but that wasn’t the Liverpool who tore up Europe last season.

“It’s a very tough period for them – eight games in 21 days – and all of them look tricky. But any result in Paris would show they have the quality to compete with the best.”
