UEFA Nations League: How can England WIN group and how can Croatia relegate them?

It is all up for grabs for Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions as rivals Croatia visit Wembley.

The sides meet for the first time since England were dumped out of the World Cup in Russia by Zlatko Dalic’s team.

Group A4 was blown wide open after Croatia beat Spain 3-2 with a last-gasp Tin Jedvaj winner on Thursday night.

And all three teams are in with a chance of qualifying for next year’s finals.

What happens if England win?

Victory would guarantee qualification for next year’s finals and would relegate Croatia to League B.

Spain would finish second and stay in League A.

What if England lose?

League B beckons if the Three Lions suffer defeat on home soil, while Croatia would win the group.

They started the tournament in dreadful fashion with a 6-0 thumping Spain in the opening game.

However, if they can pull off back-to-back wins, they will secure a place in the finals that looked unlikely at the start of the competition.

They have beaten England on their own patch only once though – a 3-2 victory in 2007 that denied the Three Lions a place at Euro 2008.

What if it’s a draw?

This is where it gets a bit more complicated.

A goalless draw would see England miss out on a place in the finals but maintain their League A status through virtue of a second-placed finish.

Spain would win the group and Croatia would be relegated.

However, a score draw would be bad news for Gareth Southgate’s side.

That would give Croatia a better head-to-head record because of their away goals against England.

Spain would progress as group winners, with Croatia second and England bottom.
