Germany PLOTTING against Trump with plan to seize on midterm results

European leaders have found themselves at odds with the Trump administration over a range of issues including environmental concerns, the Iran nuclear deal and bilateral trade.

But German foreign minister Heiko Maas said it as time for Europe to join forces and respond with a combined show of strength.

Mr Mass said he hoped Mr Trump’s policies would now be influenced by the Democrats who won control of the US House of Representatives after Tuesday’s Congressional midterm elections.

He said: “We’ll see to what extent that has an impact. We hope that this cooperation will be constructive and lead to constructive results in international politics.”

Cracks in relations between Europe and the US began to appear in June 2017 when Mr Trump announced America’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accords.

The White House then stepped away from the Iran nuclear agreement last May and reintroduced waves of sanctions against the Islamic Republic in August and then added to them earlier this week.

France has also taken a critical tone toward the US.

French finance minister Bruno Le Maire said Europe was moving forward with a special financial channel to continue trading with Iran, despite Mr Trump’s sanctions.

He said such measures were to ensure Europe’s “economic sovereignty” and shore up the euro’s strength to increase its power to the level of the US dollar.

He said: “Europe refuses to allow the US to be the trade policeman of the world.”

The comments came after President Emmanuel Macron went as far as suggesting Mr Trump had become a security threat to Europe.

He said: “When I see President Trump announcing that he’s quitting a major disarmament treaty which was formed after the 1980s Euro-missile crisis that hit Europe, who is the main victim? Europe and its security.”

Mr Macron went on the call for a “true, European army” to jointly address international threats, including from the US.

He said: “We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the USA.”

Mr Trump publicly described the EU as a “foe” alongside Russia and China in the summer when he was asked about world powers he saw as threats to the US.
