High blood pressure – the 60p breakfast drink to avoid hypertension symptoms

High blood pressure is a deadly condition that affects more than a quarter of all adults in the UK.

It’s caused by eating an unhealthy diet, including lots of salt, or by not doing enough exercise.

The condition, which is also known as hypertension, puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

But you could lower your risk of high blood pressure by drinking more pomegranate juice, it’s been revealed.

Regularly drinking the fruit juice could help to slash blood pressure levels, claimed Biochemist Dr David Williams.

It works by reducing the thickness of carotid arteries, which subsequently lowers blood pressure.

Drinking just a single cup of pomegranate juice every day could reduce systolic blood pressure by as much as 22mmHg after 12 months, he said.

“If you have high blood pressure, your diet is one of the primary ways by which you can lower your blood pressure numbers without medication,” said Williams.

“Combined with appropriate lifestyle changes and targeted nutritional support, changing your diet can not only reduce your blood pressure numbers, but significantly improve your overall cardiovascular health.

“For thousands of years, the pomegranate has been revered as the ‘fruit of life’. One of its remarkable powers is to improve cardiovascular health.”

A small study of just 19 individuals revealed pomegranate juice could reduce the thickness of carotid arteries by 35 per cent after a year, he added.

If you decide to add pomegranate juice to your diet, be sure to look out for juice that has no added sugar, Williams warned.

You could also lower your blood pressure naturally by eating more guava with your breakfast, claimed the biochemist.

The fruit is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants which help to lower cholesterol.

Eating more than four guavas a day for three months could lower blood pressure by 9/8mmHg, scientists have revealed.

High blood pressure is often known as “the silent killer”, because there aren’t usually any signs that you have the condition.

But, if you have extremely high blood pressure, there may be some characteristic symptoms to look out for.

Persistent headaches, chest pain and vision problems could all be signs of hypertension.

All adults over 40 years old should check their blood pressure at least every five years.

Speak to a GP or pharmacist to check your risk of hypertension.
