NBA news: LeBron James and Luke Walton prediction made, Lakers replacement discussed

Lakers president of operations Magic Johnson slammed Walton in a team meeting last week after their below-par start.

Johnson then responded to rumours the Lakers head coach would be sacked, claiming Walton will only go if something drastic happens.

He said: “Yeah, we’re not going to fire him.

“[The meeting last week with Walton] wasn’t even a meeting about that. We just have to be better, and that was it.

“He is going to finish the season, unless something drastic happens, which it won’t.”

However, former NBA star Rose reckons Walton will be fired, claiming James will outlast his head coach at the Lakers.

“I clearly don’t speak with Jeanie Buss, Magic Johnson or Rob Pelinka but what this tells me is this will be the only season that Luke Walton coaches LeBron James with the Lakers,” Rose told ESPN.

“Magic said Walton will coach the remainder of the year unless things go bad.

“If things go bad, he’s going to be out earlier than anticipated.”

When asked if he thinks Johnson has text Ty Lue just to check in, Rose added: “When you’re in a position of leadership and management, you’re always trying to figure out what’s next.

“I like Luke Walton, I think he did a terrific job with Golden State. He also did a good job of developing the young Lakers talent.

“You know how hard it is to develop a team that just got drafted? They had [Julius] Randle, [Jordan] Clarkson, [Brandon] Ingram, [Lonzo] Ball, [Kyle] Kuzma, [Josh] Hart – that’s a lot to manage as a head coach.

“And when he’s not the Lakers coach, he will be in line for another job.

“But this situation, once Magic goes public and we know the team won’t meet championship expectations, that makes me believe this will be his only season if he lasts coaching LeBron James in LA.”

James and the Lakers are back in action on Wednesday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Lakers are looking to bounce back from their defeat against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday.
