Danielle Mills, 29, and partner Michael heard their car alarm go off outside their home in Bedminster, Bristol, and rushed outside.
They found the rear windscreen of their grey Ford Fiesta had been shattered and a laptop stolen one night earlier this week.
Ms Mills said she attempted to “clean up what I could” but it “was dark”.
The next morning Miss Mills suffered her second shock in less than 24 hours when she saw a handwritten note attached to her front windscreen wiper.
It read: “If you feel like smashing your windows that’s fine. But please sweep up your glass. We don’t all need punctures because of you. Many thanks, Residents of M***** Road with cars, bikes and kids.”

Speaking to Bristol Live, Miss Mills said the note left her “angry” and “lost for words”.
She said: “At first I thought it might have been a note from a witness trying to help, but as soon as I read it I was just absolutely lost for words.
“I don’t know if this was someone’s idea of a tongue-in-cheek joke or something like that, but it wasn’t funny – I was quite angry when I saw it and, to be honest, quite upset.
She added: “I had tried my best last night to clean up what I could but obviously it was dark and I was planning on doing it this morning.
“I could maybe understand if we had left glass everywhere for days on end, but it was a matter of hours.
An upset Miss Mills said she found the note at 6am in the morning, following the theft which occurred at 8pm the previous evening.
She said: “I don’t understand why somebody would think this was acceptable – I think it’s fairly obvious what had happened and I’m sure most people would expect a slightly more understanding response from a neighbour.”
The couple have up posters around their street appealing for witnesses, and added they were perplexed by the uncaring response to the crime from their neighbours.
Avon and Somerset Police said: “We advise that people do not leave valuables in their vehicles and recommend either locking them securely out of sight or removing them completely.”
The force added its was still investigating the theft.
