Rafael Nadal breezed past teenager Andrey Rublev in his quarter-final 6-1 6-2 6-2 to book his place in the semis.
The Flushing Meadows crowd were hoping to see the Spaniard take on Roger Federer for the first time at the US Open but Juan Martin del Potro had other ideas.
The Argentine caused a shock upset by beating Federer 7-5 3-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-4.
But Del Potro will have to wait until the end of Kevin Anderson’s semi-final clash with Pablo Carreno Busta before he steps onto the court with Nadal.
28th seed Anderson will take on Spain’s Carreno Busta in the last four after the 12th seed beat Argentine Diego Schwartzman 6-4 6-4 6-2.
