The jacket caused wide-spread controversy, with some accusing her of not caring about children stuck in the US immigration system, while others believed it was a dig at her husband’s hard-stance policy.
Speaking on the issue for the first time, she told ABC’s Tom Llamas that she wore it “for the people and for the left-wing media who are criticising me.

The President’s policy of separating parents and children of illegal immigrants when they cross the border caused outrage across the US.
Pictures and videos merged showing upset children kept in large pens led to outcry and the eventual reversal of the White House’s immigration plan.
Melanie Trump herself condemned the separation of families via her spokeswoman, in a move which saw her publicly put herself at odds with her husband.
Her jacket consequently caused speculation she was sending a message to the President by making a point she didn’t have a problem with publicly criticising him.
“It was kind of a message.
“After the visit I put the jacket back on because I saw how the media got upset about it, obsessed about it.
“I would prefer that they would focus on what I do and on my initiatives rather than what I wear.”
The ABC sit down is the first one-to-one interview Melania has done with a TV network since becoming First Lady.
The interview was welcomed by President Trump via Twitter.
He posted: “Don’t miss our great First Lady Melania on ABC tonight. Enjoy!”
