US Open 2017: Juan Martin del Potro claims he got lucky against Roger Federer

Del Potro caused the shock of the tournament by knocking out Federer earlier this evening, winning 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4.

Most of the New York crowd were eagerly anticipating a potential showdown between Rafael Nadal and Federer in the semi-final after the Spaniard sailed through to the last four earlier on.

It would have been the first meeting between the two tennis superstars at Flushing Meadows, but Del Potro had other ideas.

The match itself failed to hit the heights of their 2009 match-up in the US Open final, with the two trading blows in the opening two sets.

But the deciding point of the match came in the third set tie break. Federer had four set point opportunities but failed to take them and all Del Potro needed was one chance and he didn’t fail to deliver.

All the momentum was with the Argentine going into the fourth set, where he broke in the fifth game before holding out his serve.

But the 28-year-old believes he was fortunate to be given the opportunity to go 2-1 up in sets after handing Federer a number of openings to win the set and take the lead.

“I think I got lucky,” Del Potro said.

“I made a double fault in at 6-6 and that cannot happen against Federer but in the end I got lucky.

“I made a good return, hit good slices and in the fourth set I played even better.”
