Second MONSTER storm joins Super Typhoon Kong-rey in RIPPING across the Pacific

At one point yesterday both were Category-5-equivalent in strength, the first time the planet has hosted two storms of the strength at the same time in over 10 years.

In the western Pacific super typhoon Kong-rey is moving in a north-westerly direction, and is expected to smash into south Korea towards the end of the week.

Kong-ey’s weakened remnant will then head on towards Japan.

Kong-rey is currently the equivalent of a Category 4 Atlantic hurricane.

It has sustained winds of 155 miles per hour and gusts of up to 190 miles per hour.

However, the storm is projected to weaken over the next few days, to wind speeds of around 85 miles per hour before it hits into South Korea.

For a period yesterday Kong-rey was a Category 5 equivalent storm, with sustained winds speeds of over 157 miles per hour.

For the first time since 2005 two storms of this strength were active at the same time.

The second is Hurricane Walaka, which is racing across the Pacific northeast.

It is currently located around 400 miles to the west of Honolulu.

Walaka’s strength has since fallen slightly, down to Category 4.

However with sustained wind speeds of 150 miles per hour it remains just seven miles per hour below the Category 5 threshold.

Four workers have been evacuated by the US Coast Guard ahead of the storm.

In a press release Captain Robert Hendrickson of the Coast Guard said: “Johnston Atoll is extremely remote and difficult to reach.

“Our resources place us in a position to lend assistance to our partners within the US Fish and Wildlife Service and we are glad to help.

“We encourage anyone operating in the Pacific to keep an eye on the weather as this storm moves toward the Northwest Hawaiian Islands.”
