93: We’re into the third-minute of stoppage time and there’s been no response from United. In fact, Derby look more likely to grab a third.

90: The return of Fergie time! There will be SIX added minutes here at Old Trafford.

88: There’s 88 minutes on the clock and Paul Pogba’s seen enough. Sky Sports cameras spot the French international get up from his seat and walk off.

What an incredible night. Lee Grant does well to save a fizzing strike but the rebound drops kindly for Jack Marriott, who heads home.

We go to VAR to see if the striker was offside… he’s not and the goal stands.

Ten-man Manchester United are five minutes plus stoppage time from being knocked out of the Carabao Cup to Championship Derby.

83: Wooosh! Fellaini, in signature style, knocks a ball down for Martial but the French winger gets too excited and slashes it miles over.

Remember, there is no extra-time should this finish 1-1. It’ll go straight to the dreaded penalties…

80: We’re into the final ten minutes here at Old Trafford. It sounds strange, but Manchester United have been miles better with a man less.

78: Take a bow, Lee Grant. The goalkeeper really has been thrown into the fire but despite not playing ANY football this season – he makes a terrific one-handed stop to Jozefzoon.

75: Sergio Romero is the first Manchester United player to receive a straight red card at Old Trafford in any competition since Eric Bailly did so back in May 2017 against Celta Vigo in the Europa League.

73: Woodwork! Romelu Lukaku looks to the sky in frustration. He does so well to swivel just inside the area before slamming it against the post. Fred sends the rebound wide as this game goes completely bonkers.

70: It took a while to take, and it wasn’t worth it. Mason Mount takes this free-kick and slams it straight into the wall. Why on earth the bloke that just scored a worldie from 30-yards didn’t take it is beyond me.

67: Sergio Romero RED CARD! Manchester United’s goalkeeper is OFF for a blatant use of his hand outside the penalty area. Dave Nugent nips through on goal and attempts to poke it beyond the stopper – who slaps the ball with his left hand.

United down to ten with Lee Grant replacing Juan Mata. Derby have a free-kick just outside the penalty area in a central position. I wonder who will take this?!

65: Cometh the hours cometh Marouane Fellaini. The big Belgian arrives as Manchester United look to go route-one against Championship Derby. He replaces Jesse Lingard. Fred is also on for Ander Herrera.

63: What?! WHAT?! Stop whatever you’re doing, search Twitter and find a video of Harry Wilson’s free-kick – it’s a stunner.

On-loan Liverpool forward Harry Wilson lines up a free-kick from the better part of 30 yards. Everyone thinks it’s too far away but the sheer amount of swerve leaves Romero motionless as it crashes into the corner. Game on!

60: We’ve reached the hour-mark and there’s only ONE side scoring the next goal. It isn’t Manchester United, who have barely woken up for the second half.

58: A frustrated Lingard is booked for dissent. He’s getting really frustrated, as are Manchester United fans watching Derby play the better and more dangerous football.

Forsyth does exceptionally well to tip-toe around Dalot, Matic and Herrera before being crowded out inside the penalty area.

55: Close! What a glorious chance for Derby. It’s a slick passing move with the ball making its way to Wilson. He strikes at goal and Romero palms it wide for a corner.

53: Forsyth is booked for tugging Lingard back. He’s not really been involved much tonight.

50: Sergio! Romero makes a real hash of a clearance and strikes it against the onrushing Nugent. Fortunately for him – the rebound fell to Dalot to clear.

48: Derby start on the front-foot with Lukaku forced to track back and do his defensive duties.

45: And we’re back underway folks. No changes for either side. One bloke in the office wasn’t very impressed with Jose Mourinho and Frank Lampard strolling out laughing and patting each other on the backs.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Nadeem: Mourinho needs to start with Martial on left, Rashford on right and Sanchez down the middle.. Their pace and skills will simply kill opposition.

Martin: The reason Mata & Martial are not starting much is despite tonight they’ve not had a great year, especially Martial. The reason Pogba & Sanchez are not playing as well as they have for country & past clubs is not just down to Mourinho. Players get too many excuses!

Ricky: Why always Lukaku? Seriously, his form is terrible, nowhere near the quality to warrant his starting role. United are a team divided, always good individual performances on show, but it’s not clicked as a team.

HT: It’s advantage United at the break. The Red Devils started in impressive fashion and scored a cracker courtesy of Juan Mata but Derby stood firm, rode their luck and are still within striking distance. I’d say we’re set up nicely for the second half.

44: The game’s completely lost its rhythm over the last few minutes. The crowd has quietened down significantly and we’ve seen precious little quality.

41: Penalty appeal! Forsyth and Lukaku get their legs in a tangle when chasing for Matic’s throughball. The referee isn’t interested, nor is VAR, which is in operation tonight.

39: Remember, no added time tonight should the match finish in a draw. It’s straight to penalties. And that’s fabulous news because I have a date with an Apple strudel and GBBO.

36: David Nugent knows how to give defenders a difficult time. He shrugs off the attentions of Jones inside the penalty area but glances his header wide.

33: It’s a PROPER battle in that midfield area. Neither side is giving an inch with the chances drying up completely. That doesn’t mean I’m giving you permission at go and watch The Great British Bake Off…

30: We’ve reached the half-hour mark and this one’s been pretty entertaining. Frank Lampard will be delighted with the way his side have gone about their business. The same goes for Jose Mourinho minus missed chances.

27: United with their foot firmly on the gas now. First Lingard sees a free-kick divert wide for a corner before Bailly rises highest inside the penalty area to nod wide.

24: I can’t use emojis on here but I’d be using the monkey that covers its eyes for this squandered opportunity. Anthony Martial does exceptionally well to reach the byline and floats a cross up to Romelu Lukaku, who heads over from two-yards away.

OK, he was under quite a bit of pressure but that’s simply got to be 2-0.

21: Nice move from the Championship side with Mount and Wilson linking up before it’s teed up for Bryson to fire wide from 20-yards out.

18: Bennett hits the deck after colliding with Matic in the air. Many have befallen the same fate. He’s up and about again as Derby look to retain possession and take the sting out of Jose Mourinho’s side.

15: Derby look a high-risk side if you ask me. Easily carved open but are fully capable of doing the same to their opposition.

13: Strewth! I don’t know how, what or why Romelu Lukaku hasn’t stuck that into the net. The striker does some great work to dispossess Keogh and runs through on goal but dithers, delays and eventually side-foots wide under pressure from Tomori. It should be 2-0 and quite possibly – game over!

10: Close! Ashley Young plays a nice cross over to Juan Mata, who broke the line, but Carson claws it wide for a corner. Nemanja Matic connected but sent it wide.

8: What a pleasant surprise this has been. Both sides are gunning for it and creating good openings. More goals are certain.

5: Well that’s pretty-much the perfect start for Jose Mourinho, but it nearly went pear-shaped very quickly!

Mason Mount, the young man everyone is tipping for big things, slices United apart with a pin-point throughball but Romero makes an excellent block to deny Bennett.

MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 DERBY | MATA

3: Hello, Manchester United. Where on earth have you been?!

The Red Devils take the lead with a terrific opener. It’s a counter-attacking move with Anthony Martial sweeping the ball in from the left and Romelu Lukaku gets the faintest of flicks over to Juan Mata, who drills it into the bottom left-hand corner.

3: The Red Devils should be ahead. Anthony Martial, who is terrific when he gets motoring, drives down the left and delivers a great cross on the money for Romelu Lukaku, who glances it straight at Carson.

2: Drama inside the opening 30 seconds as Jesse Lingard loses a boot in the tackle. Somebody get that man velcro boots.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 DERBY

1: OK, all the talk of Paul Pogba can be set aside for 90 minutes while we get back to the actual business of football at Old Trafford. We’re underway!

PREDICTIONS?

19:55: I know you’re going to say that I’m unadventurous backing the favourite but that statistics speak for themselves.

Jose Mourinho has never lost a home match in the League Cup and Derby have lost seven of their past eight visits to Old Trafford.

It might not be easy but I’ll go for 2-0 to the Red Devils.

WHERE’S POGBA?

19:50: There’s no real need to preface this because it’s probably all you’ve heard for the past two or three hours – but where is Paul Pogba?

“Yeah, rested,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “I gave a rest to Luke Shaw, to Paul Pogba, to Victor Lindelof, to Antonio Valencia, to David de Gea. I give a rest to these factors. I knew that I couldn’t give much more.

“I knew I have to play a very good team because I was expecting from Frank Lampard and Derby what they bring.”

19:35: Ouch. Jose Mourinho with an unmistakable dig at some of his players in tonight’s programme.

United were held at home by Wolves on Saturday in the Premier League, halting an improved run of results and If it wasn’t for David de Gea – the hosts may have come away with nothing.

“An important lesson, a lesson I repeat week after week after week, a lesson some boys are not learning, every team that play Man Utd are playing the game of their lives,” Mourinho wrote, referencing the draw with Wolves.

“We need to match that of aggression, motivation and desire. 95 percent isn’t enough.”

Steve Cummins: The Pogba and Mourinho soap opera continues to bring Manchester United in to disrepute, neither are worthy of being at the club of Busby, Charlton and Ferguson.

Stephen: This is getting really bad. Mourinho or Pogba, one has got to go. Their egos are starting to bring an unwanted spotlight on a great club. We should be celebrating Sir Alex’s recovery and planning for our future, not this ‘who’s got the biggest’ distraction.

Jon: If the club (Ed, Glazers) have any sense (which they don’t) they will get rid of Jose. No player is bigger than the club, but he’s not getting the best out of our forwards, can’t get on with our best outfield player Pogba, and the football & now results are terrible.

FRANK REUNION

19:20: Frank Lampard is looking forward to pitting his wits against former mentor Jose Mourinho. Couldn’t have picked a better time for it, Frankie.

Lampard, who is finding his feet in his first job in management, watched his Derby side climb into the top six of the Championship with a stylish 3-1 home win against Brentford on Saturday.

Lampard expects his Derby side to face a tough test regardless of United’s relative struggles this season, adding: “It’s a very tough challenge. We know what we’re coming up against – a great Manchester United team who have been out together with quality everywhere you look.

“The fact we are on telly against one of the top teams in the Premier League is a great challenge for us. They’re expected to win, quite rightly so with the squad they’ve amassed there.”

JOSE RELISHES PRESSURE

19:15: Well that’s convenient…

Jose Mourinho insists he relishes the pressure cup competitions can create as he seeks to draw a line under another turbulent weekend.

“I like the cups. I like the feeling of the knockout: you win you are in the competition, you lose you are out. I like that pressure and honestly I think fans also like it.

“In this moment you don’t even have the possibility of, after a draw, playing 30 more minutes – you go straight to a penalty shootout which obviously is a 50/50 situation.

“I think it’s good because no extra-time, no more extra minutes that we already have, especially the teams that are playing European competitions and especially when it goes to the end of the competitions – extra-time is really, really difficult.”

Ben: I think Paul Pogba’s “attack, attack, attack” comment has been overblown. Was it really that much of an ‘attack’ on Mourinho or just stating the obvious in aftermath of a poor draw? Jose’s response, telling him he’ll never be captain again in front of whole squad, isn’t helpful.

Declan: Can Paul Pogba just do us all a favour and leave the Premier League?! Go be a ‘hero’ in Serie A. The drama that surrounds him doesn’t match up with the quality you see on the pitch, bored of him now.

Devon: Actually feel for Paul Pogba. Manchester United or should I say Jose Mourinho has ruined him. Someone with that much talent should be put in the middle of the park and be allowed to play freely.

PAUL POGBA – THE SITUATION

18:50: Paul Pogba has reportedly been told by manager Jose Mourinho that he will never captain Manchester United again.

Preparations for tonight’s Carabao Cup match against Derby have been disrupted by news that the club-record signing’s tense relationship with the manager had reached a new low.

Pogba was not pictured with the United squad ahead of the third-round tie and is reported to have been told earlier in the day in front of the squad that he would not skipper the side again as he does not embody what the club is about.

The France international, who has captained the side three times this season, was part of the team that drew 1-1 against promoted Wolves and said afterwards that the Red Devils should “attack, attack, attack”.

“Jose told the players that Pogba will not be the captain because he doesn’t represent what a captain is and Manchester United is bigger than anyone,” a Carrington source revealed. “The players were happy with that decision and the reasons behind the manager’s decision.”

I wonder what Mino Raiola is going to say about this…

Yes, I’ve used the term ‘entertain’ very loosely indeed.

I was going to say that Manchester United have a great opportunity to put a couple of tough days behind them with a thumping victory tonight.

However, the breaking reports regarding Paul Pogba could make that rather tricky.

We’ll get to that fiasco, Frank Lampard and plenty more throughout the night. Let’s get started!

TEAM NEWS

Ander Herrera is available for Manchester United’s Carabao Cup third-round clash against Derby following his recovery from an ankle complaint.

Fellow midfielder Nemanja Matic could return after missing the 1-1 draw with Wolves due to suspension but forward Marcus Rashford is sidelined as he serves the last of a three-match ban while defender Marcos Rojo (knee) is the only injury absentee.

Teenage full-back Diogo Dalot is in line to start as Jose Mourinho ponders whether to shuffle his pack and give outings to several fringe players for the visit of the Rams.

CARABAO CUP FOURTH-ROUND DRAW…

There will be 16 teams remaining in the Carabao Cup after this week’s fixtures and they won’t have to wait long to find out their next opponents.

The Carabao Cup fourth-round draw will be broadcast live on Saturday, September 29 on Quest (Sky channel 144, Virgin media channel 172, Freeview channel 37) at 9pm.

The programme has been extended by 15 minutes to make room for the draw and is scheduled to run until 10.45pm

The EFL are due to release the Carabao Cup fourth round draw ball numbers after tomorrow’s fixtures.
