WWE news: Vince McMahon backs THIS Smackdown superstar to win Royal Rumble next year

According to Ringside News, Joe Peisich said on the Barnburner Fired Up podcast that McMahon has been very impressed with Almas and his manager Zelina Vega’s work on Smackdown.

It was also claimed that the WWE Chairman and CEO may have the ex-NXT Champion compete in a main-event match at WrestleMania 35 via the Royal Rumble.

Peisich said: “Vince McMahon is in love with them [Almas and Vega]. Expect huge things.

“I have even heard a rumour that Vince may even make Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas win the Royal Rumble.”

Almas started wrestling at the age of 13 in Mexico and went on to become famous as La Sombra (The Shadow).

The 28-year-old also enjoyed a successful five-year stint at New Japan Pro-Wrestling where he became the IWGP Intercontinental Champion.

In 2015 he joined NXT where he beat the likes of Johnny Gargano, Kassius Ohno and Roderick Strong.

His biggest moment in the developmental roster, however, came two years later when he defeated Drew McIntyre for the NXT Championship.

Almas was a surprise entrant in this year’s Men’s Royal Rumble Match and put together an impressive performance as he eliminated Kofi Kingston.

The Mexican then joined Smackdown and has shown plenty of quality as he has taken on the likes of Rusev, Daniel Bryan and WWE Champion AJ Styles.

According to the bookies, however, Almas isn’t the favourite to triumph in January’s Pay-Per-View extravaganza.

Sky Bet have placed The Rock as a shock favourite whereas the likes of Bryan, Braun Strowman, Intercontinental Champion Seth Rollins and Finn Balor complete the top five.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson won the Royal Rumble Match in 2000 and went on to main-event WrestleMania 16 against Triple H, Big Show and Mick Foley.

The Great One’s last bout took place at WrestleMania 32 where he destroyed Erick Rowan in just six seconds with one Rock Bottom.

Johnson is now one of the biggest stars in Hollywood and has worked with some of the industry’s biggest names like Jason Statham, Christopher Walken and John Travolta.
