The magnitude 5.2 tremor hit 39 miles north east of the city of Mataram, according to data from the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake hit at 9.22pm BST (4.22am Tuesday local time).
It struck at a depth of just 6.2 miles (10km), USGS said.
People in the area reported their experience of the tremor on the website of earthquake service CSEM/EMSC.
One said: “I woke up. Felt strong.”

Another resident in Mataram said they felt the earth shake for a few seconds.
No tsunami warning has been issued following the earthquake.
Lombok has been hit by a series of strong earthquakes throughout July and August.
More than 500 people have died in the tremors which flattened buildings and left hundreds of thousands without homes.
On July 29, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck which caused widespread damage and weakened the foundations of buildings across the island.
Subsequent tremors registering as 7.0, 5.9, 6.5 and 5.1 magnitude quakes struck through August.
Lombok is popular with tourists due to its proximity to nearby Bali and the Gili Islands.
Lombok itself is home to the 3,700 metre Mount Rinjani, an active volcano which features a stunning caldera at its summit.
