‘NO HOPE for EU’ Swedish MEP claims Swexit referendum on the cards if EU doesn’t CHANGE

Speaking exclusively to ahead of today’s , the  Democrats MEP claimed a referendum on his country’s membership to the would soon be needed unless Brussels reverted to its original function of peacekeeping.

Mr Lundgren argued, with the rise of eurosceptic parties across the Continent, the next European Parliament election will be crucial for reformists such as himself to gain the seats of the biggest party in Europe.

The Swedish MEP claimed a reform of the European Union to revert it back to its original roots could only be possible if eurosceptic representatives gained power in Brussels.

He said: “Years ago I wouldn’t have thought it was possible, but when I see the political development of the last year and I see how the eurosceptic movement is picking up its speed, I actually honestly believe that after the next European election three will be a very big possibility to form the biggest political group in the European Parliament.

“That will include all the eurosceptic groups.

“And then it could be possible to solve and to reform the European Union.

“I think most people, if you talked to them on the streets, if you explained to them that we would go back to the intention of the European Union from the beginning to be a peacekeeping project – a project that makes it easier to trade and dealing with each other – if you explained to people that it’s possible to go back, I think we would find the support for that.

“And then I think it could be possible [for Sweden] to remain a member of the European Union.

“But if it remains as it is today, a political union with very clear power ambitions, then I think there is no hope.

“Then we need to call for a referendum. We need to vote about staying or not staying and then of course also be prepared to negotiate about it afterwards.”

Sweden looks set to stun the European establishment today by turning a fringe far-right eurosceptic party into the second biggest party in parliament – perhaps even the biggest.

Swedes went to the polls at 8am for a crucial election that could eventually trigger a referendum on membership of the European Union.

The anti-EU Swedish Democrats have gained a surge in support for their criticisms of establishment politicians, Brussels and the continent’s response to the migrant crisis of 2015.

While the SD party has seen soaring poll support, critics have attacked the party for its well-publicised neo-Nazi roots.

The party has been vocal in its goal to eventually take the country out of the European Union.

They have also focused on restricting immigration, amid a widespread populist surge throughout Europe.

The last poll before the key election saw the Swedish centre-left bloc hold a slim lead over the centre-right.
