EU CIVIL WAR: Top MEP declares war on own MEMBER STATES – ‘NO PLACE in our union’

In an irate Tweet Mr Verhofstadt attached an article about France saying that they no longer want to pay for Poland and Hungary.

The Belgian MEP said: “There is no place in our union for countries who take EU money but reject our shared values! #ValuesFirst.”

The blast follows France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian making it clear his country will not finance a populist Europe.

The French minister said: “Each member state has the right to choose such leaders as they wish.

“But our vision of the Union as a basic circle of alliances and values does not fit with governments that do not respect fundamental principles and do not feel bound in any way by community solidarity.”

He said that these countries, referring to Poland and Hungary, “choose only what is in their interest, and above all, when its comes to traders of money.”

He also said: “We are not ready to continue paying for the Europe, this must be said clearly.”

This comes after the Mr Verhofstadt has blasted Poland and Hungary in the past for not following EU rules and said the nations were undermining democracy to built “illiberal societies”.

He tweeted earlier this year: “The European Union was built to guarantee our citizens’ freedom, democracy and the rule of law.

“If the Hungarian and Polish governments want to build closed and illiberal societies, they must do it outside the EU.”

The European Commission has cut the amount of funding that Poland is due to receive from the cohesion funds by 23 percent.

Brussels has repeatedly clashed with Hungary and Viktor Orban’s government as the bloc’s executive fear eastern countries are turning away from the democratic values on which the EU is built.

Hungary and Poland are under fire from Brussels over their repeated refusal to take in migrants under a quota system.

The EU is concerned Poland is undermining democratic checks and balances and has launched an unprecedented process to suspend Poland’s voting rights in the European Union.
