‘STATE of EMERGENCY’: 400 prisoners and Gaddafi supporters ESCAPE prison in Tripoli, Libya

According to a police statement “the detainees were able to force open the doors” and leave Ain Zara prison.

Guards did not intervene as they feared for their own lives.

Most of the Libyan prisoners were supporters of former dictator Muammar Gaddafi, and had been found guilty of killings during the uprising that overturned his regime in 2011.

The huge jail break comes amid heavy fighting between rival groups in the area.

Fierce clashes erupted last week between the Seventh Brigade, from Tarhouna, a town 40 miles southeast of Tripoli, against the Tripoli Revolutionaries’ Brigadesand the Nawasi, two of the capital’s largest armed militias.

According to a health ministry toll, on Sunday, the clashes left at least 41 people dead and 123 injured.

The UN-backed government based in Tripoli declared a state of emergency in the capital “given the seriousness of the current situation”.

It said in a statement: “Due to the danger of the current situation and for the sake of the public interest, the presidential council declares the state of emergency in the capital, Tripoli, and its suburbs to protect and secure civilians, public and private possessions and vital institutions.”

Armed groups have been fighting for control of the Libyan capital since the regime of dictator Moammar Gadhafi was toppled in 2011.

The country is currently governed by rival authorities in Tripoli and the east, but each authority is backed by armed militias.

Additionally, terror groups, such as the “Islamic State,” have taken advantage of the political turmoil and to get a stronger position in the country.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the escalation of violence and warned that “indiscriminate use of force is a violation of international humanitarian and human rights law.”

On Saturday, the US, UK, France and Italy called for an immediate end to deadly violence in Tripoli.

The joint statement read: “These attempts to weaken the legitimate Libyan authorities and hinder the ongoing political process are not acceptable.

“We are calling on the armed groups to immediately stop all military action and warn those who seek to undermine stability, in Tripoli or elsewhere in Libya, that they will be made accountable for it.”
