Lewis Hamilton: Italian Grand Prix win shows why Brit could be GOAT

That’s the view of 2016 F1 world champion Nico Rosberg, who saw Hamilton bounce back from a first lap collision with Sebastian Vettel to win at Monza.

Hamilton started the race in third with the Ferrari pair of Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen ahead of him on the front row.

But the 33-year-old got ahead of the pair to claim his fifth victory at the famous Monza track.

Hamilton passed Raikkonen with seven laps to go and held on to build a 30-point lead ahead of Vettel in the championship.

And the Brit’s thrilling win in Italy secures his place among the all-time greats according to Rosberg.

“It was an epic drive from Lewis,” said Rosberg.

“That is why he is considered to be one of the best of all time. He showed it again today in an inferior car.

“He nailed the start, got Sebastian, which made him have a huge mistake, and then got Kimi as well. It doesn’t get better than that.

“Hamilton is driving phenomenally and is surely at the peak of his career.”

Vettel blamed Hamilton for the first lap collision, which was deemed a ‘racing incident’ by stewards.

It effectively ended the German’s race as he was left at the back of the grid.

And Hamilton insists he was well within his right to make a move and the outcome was just unfortunate.

“Well it worked. I think it was a racing move,” Hamilton said.

“It was pretty much the same manoeuvre that Kimi did to me. I don’t really know what to say. It was a racing manoeuvre and that’s what we are supposed to be doing out there.

“I left him space, I was still on track. But I’m sure it was a comment that was done in the heat of the moment and its never a great moment when you spin and you have cars coming towards you.

“Then you get back up and you have to come back through.

“I don’t take anything from it and I know how it is to be in that emotion and I’m sure he didn’t really mean to much by it.”
