Rafael Nadal: Jim Courier reveals what impressed him most about epic US Open win

Nadal survived a scare from Karen Khachanov before prevailing in four gruelling sets in just shy of four and a half hours on court in the Arthur Ashe stadium.

The world No 1 moved into the fourth round and he will now face Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili.

And Jim Courier believes Nadal’s work ethic sets him apart from his rivals in the game.

“We’re so lucky to get a chance to still see this guy compete,” Courier said on Amazon Prime’s live coverage.

“And do it at such a high level.

“He’s ever the professional. A lot of players who play around four and a half hours of grinding tennis wouldn’t be thinking about how to improve, they would be celebrating the moment.

“But that’s not Nadal.

“He looks forward to what is ahead in this tournament.

“He left a mark on everyone in this stadium.”

Although Nadal had hid right knee taped up, Greg Rusedski doesn’t think an injury could derail his bid to successfully defend the title.

He said: “He says it didn’t bother him.

“He knows how to manage it and he knows what he has to do.

“And the good news is he didn’t take any painkillers on the court.

“When a player takes painkillers, then you know something is usually more serious.”
