On Thursday night, there were a total of 1,526 people staying in 36 shelters across Hawaii.
The Red Cross has blamed the lack of shelters on Hawaii’s isolation and vulnerability, and recommends that people prepare emergency kits for 14 days and bring their emergency
supplies with them to shelters.
NOAA has declared the levels of torrential rainfall a “catastrophe” as the hurricane is still barrelling through the Pacific Ocean at about 180 miles (290 km) southeast of Kailua-Kona.
More than a foot (30cm) of rain has already fallen on the eastern side of the Big Island of Hawaii, said Kelly Wooten, a spokeswoman for the Hawaii County Civil Defense agency.
