Federer will return for his second match of the day tonight when he takes on Wawrinka in the quarter-finals.
The world No 2 was frustrated when he was unable to get on court on Thursday because of the rain, meaning he was forced to play twice today.
But he made light work of Leonardo Mayer by wrapping up the win in just one hour and 13 minutes – of which the first set was completed within 23 minutes.
Federer will return to court immediately after Novak Djokovic vs Milos Raonic, which is expected to be completed by 11pm (BST).

Amazon Prime are going to be a major disruptor in the world of tennis broadcast rights when they take over the lion’s share of ATP events from next season.
They bid around £10million a year for the privilege, outstripping Sky who paid £8million a year for the deal which expires this year.
In 2019, tech giants Amazon will exclusively show 38 ATP events including all 1000 level events like the Cincinnati Masters and have also taken the rights to the US Open.
However, this year’s Western and Southern Open, to use its officially sponsored name, will still be on Sky with coverage on both Sky Sports Arena and often on Sky Sports Main Event.
But Federer and Wawrinka’s clash will be shown on Sky Sports Arena this evening at around 11pm (BST).
