Kerala flood latest news: Death toll rises to 87 as monsoon flooding worsens

More than 2,400 villages have been badly damaged since the monsoon hit on August 8.

The death toll is expected to increase further this week.

The Supreme Court has issued a statement on the flood situation in Kerala, calling it “grave.”

Almost 35 million people live in Kerala and the area is also home to 321,000 indigenous people, according to the Indian government.

The Office of Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan urged people to make themselves visible to rescue teams arriving in the food zone.

The minister tweeted: “Air lifting has starting in Chalakudy and Bhoothathankettu areas. Please stand in open areas on top of buildings and houses to avoid possible hindrances by trees.”

Hundreds people have been left homeless and about 4,000 families have been evacuated from the banks of Pariyar into relief camps.

It is not yet clear exactly how many people have been affected by the ongoing disaster.

The government issues a red alert in all the 14 districts of Kerala, with heavy rainfall predicted until Saturday.

This includes Kasaragod in the north to Thiruvananthapuram in the south.

Thousands of people in the Pathanamthitta district in central Kerala have been trapped in their homes, and the district has been one of the worst affected in the last 24 hours.

Cochin airport has been shut until Saturday, and railways have been suspended.

For the first time in history, the state of Kerala has opened 35 out of its 39 dams – hoping to release some of the excess water as monsoon rains continue.

The National Crisis Management Committee will meet tomorrow to go through the storage of water and file a report on how to reduce the water level.

The Indian government has launched relief and rescue operations.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRP), has sent in 18 teams, while eight teams from Engineering Task Force (ETC) of the Army and 22 teams of Coast Guard have also been dispatched to assist.

In addition, 24 diving teams from the Indian Navy have been drafted in.

While helicopters, aircrafts, boats, equipment, life buoys, life jackets, are also on their way to assist with the rescue operations.

Kerala is no stranger to rain, and is experiencing its third flooding since June.

Due to its location on the southwestern Indian peninsula, it is an area exposed to rain from the southwestern monsoon.

The state of Kerala is vulnerable to a large number of natural disasters, and has resulted in the loss of many lives, livelihoods, infrastructure and property.
