Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp reveals most important business through the summer

Liverpool brought in four new arrivals during the summer, totalling more than £150m.

Xherdan Shaqiri, Alisson, Naby Keita and Fabinho all joined the Reds as they look to challenge for the Premier League title.

They got their campaign off to a flying start with Sadio Mane scoring twice in a 4-0 opening weekend win over West Ham.

Klopp was joined in the dugout by Pepijn Lijnders after the coach returned during the summer to take up a role on the backroom staff.

He had left in January to take on the managerial position at NEC Nijmegen and Klopp believes the return of the Dutchman is a big plus point.

“It is important to mention a returning individual within our own camp: Pepijn Lijnders,” Klopp wrote in Liverpool’s official matchday programme.

“I cannot begin to tell you how positive it is for Liverpool Football Club that we have Pep back and in such a senior capacity.

“He is totally committed to the best values we hold; his influence this season and for season to come will be important for the entire football operations and I think we have someone who is world class as a coach but also as a person.

“Likewise with Peter Krawietz, who has been with me throughout my time at Liverpool and previously at Dortmund and Mainz.

“I have complete trust in Pete and know he is someone who will work non-stop to make sure we are the best prepared for every challenge we face.

“I feel very blessed to be supported by both of them, as well as John Achterberg, Andreas Kornmayer and the countless others at Melwood who are vital to us.”

Following a successful start to the season, which saw Liverpool top the table after the first gameweek, the Reds travel to Crystal Palace on Monday (8pm).

Many have tipped Klopp’s side to rival Manchester City for this season’s title as they look to win the Premier League for the first time.

But Klopp has admitted he has no intentions of being the No 1 team.

“If a team is better than yours, then you have to work out how to be at their level and how to beat them,” he said.

“I have never wanted to have the best team. I have never wanted to be the best player or the best manager. What interests me is to beat the best.

“The best team today in England is Manchester City. The goal then is to beat City as often as possible.”
