Arsenal news: Bernd Leno sends pre-Man City message to fans, will he start over Petr Cech?

Leno joined Arsenal for £19million from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer and made two appearances over pre-season.

And ahead of Sunday’s Premier League opener against Manchester City, manager Unai Emery held a training session today for his players at the Emirates.

It gave the summer signings, including Leno, the first look at their new surroundings.

And in a video posted on Arsenal’s social media channels, Leno expressed his excitement ahead of the new campaign.

He said: “Hi fans, my first time in my new home. Looking forward to the new season.

“I hope we will have a great season.”

Emery has been coy over whether Leno or Petr Cech will start against City.

Cech has been the first choice goalkeeper since his arrival from Chelsea in 2015.

Leno is expected to be Cech’s long-term replacement at Arsenal but speaking last month, the 36-year-old insisted the arrival of the Germany international provided healthy competition.

“I said from the start I want to stay and fight for my place in the team and I will honour my contract, unless the club tells me to go,” Cech told Sky Sports News.

“I am performing hard and training hard every day to be ready and be ready for when my opportunity comes.

“I want to show the manager I can be the starting goalkeeper and all the players do the same and I think it’s great for the team.”

In Unai we trust

After 22 years with Arsene Wenger at the helm, Arsenal enter into a new chapter this season with head coach Unai Emery.

The Gunners have improved the defence with some positive summer transfer business.

However, the fixture list has not been kind, with the visit of champions City on Sunday followed by a trip to Chelsea.

No points from Emery’s opening two games is a distinct possibility – and one which would give the divided fanbase something new to rant about.
