Two decades ago, the landscape of YouTube videos was vastly different. The platform, now known for elaborate, long-form content from creators like MrBeast, began with humble origins. There were no sophisticated lighting setups, refined sound effects, or rapid jump cuts.
The Dawn of YouTube: “Me at the Zoo”
The inaugural YouTube video, titled “Me at the Zoo,” was posted on April 23, 2005. This 19-second clip features YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim in front of elephants at the San Diego Zoo.
“Alright, so here we are, in front of the elephants,” Karim says, looking back at the animals. The video briefly shows an elephant using its trunk to put hay into its mouth. “The cool thing about these guys is that they have really, really, really long um… trunks, and that’s cool,” Karim gestures. Then he looks back at the elephants once more. “And that’s pretty much all there is to say.” (Karim had uploaded another video titled “Rolling down a hill” on April 23rd, but it was subsequently removed.)
“My Snowboarding Skillz”: An Early Viral Moment
Later that same day, the user “mw” uploaded “My Snowboarding Skillz.” This marked the arrival of the first “fail” video on YouTube, a popular genre in the years that would follow. The grainy, 10-second video captures the sound of a snowboarder approaching a snowy ramp, only to fall. The individual gets up, and the video concludes abruptly.
“tribute”: A Brief Moment of Expression
On April 24, 2005, another user, “gp,” shared a video called “tribute.” At just five seconds, it remains the shortest of these initial uploads. It shows a person in a brown jacket balancing in a hallway that resembles a dormitory. After jumping up and briefly balancing against the walls they let out a primal scream. Another person, presumably the camera operator, says “Very nice” as the first person lands with a thud.
