Gary Lineker Reflects on Immigration Policy Criticism and BBC Fallout
Gary Lineker maintains he holds no misgivings about publicly criticizing the government’s policy on immigration, though he expresses regret over the repercussions for the BBC. The controversy surrounding Lineker’s impartiality duties ignited in 2023 when he denounced an asylum policy as “immeasurably cruel” on social media, drawing parallels between the language in a promotional video and “Germany in the 30s.”
The former England star, who has anchored the BBC’s flagship football highlights program Match of the Day since 1999, was temporarily sidelined until a resolution regarding his social media conduct was reached. Colleagues Alan Shearer and Ian Wright showed their support by boycotting the show, resulting in an episode aired without regular commentators in May 2023.
Lineker’s Stance: No Regrets Over Accuracy
Reflecting on his statements in a recent BBC interview, Lineker stated: “I do not rue expressing them publicly, because I was factually correct – what I expressed, held accuracy. In that respect, I have no reservations.”
“However, would I repeat it in hindsight? No, I would refrain due to the ensuing disruption. It was an excessive response triggered by a discourteous remark. My rejoinder was not excessively impolite in return.”
“However, I would avoid the situation given the subsequent turmoil. I hold the BBC in high regard and was distressed by the reputational harm it endured because of the situation. Therefore, while I do not express remorse, and maintain my actions were not unjustifiable, I would act differently to protect the organization I love.”

Impartiality Debate and Changing Rules
Lineker’s suspension reignited the discussion on whether the BBC’s impartiality guidelines should extend to all employees or only those in specific roles. The 64-year-old supports the latter view.
“These regulations were intended for individuals in news and current affairs departments,” he clarified. “Though alterations have occurred since, some roles should remain exempt. Subsequently, the guidelines were broadened affecting individuals like myself, who has always offered candid opinions. Suddenly the shift towards this impartiality is difficult to accept, and has little effect on areas outside News.”
“I have consistently advocated for issues important to me such as human rights, and intend to continue. The parameters shifted dramatically. It was an issue that was never a problem, until it suddenly became pertinent.”
Lineker’s Departure from Match of the Day
It was revealed in November that Lineker would be stepping down from Match of the Day at the conclusion of the current season, marking the end of a 26-year tenure at the helm. The BBC will replace him with a rotation of presenters including Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, and Gabby Logan.
The Decision Behind the Change
The planned transition surprised many, and Lineker hinted that the decision was less than simple.
He elaborated: “Ultimately, there was a collective sentiment that a new rights period presented an opportune moment to revamp the program. I believe the BBC favored introducing new personalities instead of extending my involvement with Match of the Day for another year.”
