Deadmau5 Apologizes After Coachella Set Cut Short
Electronic music producer Deadmau5, also known as Joel Thomas Zimmerman, has issued an apology following the premature conclusion of his Testpilot performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Fans attending the popular event in Indio, California, witnessed the abrupt ending to the DJ’s set on Friday.
Coachella Performance Incident
The Canadian DJ and Zhu, another music producer with whom he was sharing the stage, were observed consuming alcoholic beverages behind their DJ consoles. An Instagram video captured Deadmau5 appearing unsteady, struggling to maintain balance, while performing his set.
Subsequently, Deadmau5 halted the music and informed the audience that both he and Zhu had been instructed to leave the stage.
“I Don’t Remember a Thing”: Deadmau5 Reacts
The 44-year-old EDM artist acknowledged the incident in a social media post on Saturday, stating, “I don’t remember a thing.” He humorously added, “But I don’t think I had a cig? So… that’s good I guess?”
In the same post, featuring a photo of a water bottle, he remarked, “Going back to bed,” and “Wake me up around Thursday ish.”

Possible Last Coachella Performance
In response to comments on his Instagram post, the DJ hinted that his recent Friday night performance at Coachella “probably my last” appearance at the renowned festival.
“Probably my last coachella show,” Deadmau5 commented.
Further exchanges in the comment section between Deadmau5 and Zhu revealed that whisky consumption was a factor during their joint Coachella performance.
“Dude… that whisky. I can’t. lol,” the “I Remember” DJ admitted to Zhu. “Good to see you again tho!”
Second Apology and Reflection
On Sunday, Deadmau5 returned to social media to reiterate his apology to fans regarding his conduct onstage two nights prior in Indio, California.
“Man, even my cat is disappointed in me. Tho, it could be argued that she always has been,” he wrote alongside a picture of his cat. “Sorry about last night. Lol. TO BE FAIR, I felt the first 3/4 was great!”
Deadmau5 extended a “Huge shout out to [Zhu] for introducing me to whisky and carrying my dumb ass till the bitter end,” adding, “Lemme quit smoking, do some f–ken personal resetting here at home, find my spirit animal, work on some new music, and come back better.”
Pre-Performance Health and Lifestyle Changes
The day preceding his Coachella performance, Deadmau5 had disclosed on Instagram feeling unwell, stating he was “coming down with a little bug.” However, he assured fans, “don’t worry” because he was “100% still going to rock out with Zhu” the following night.
He also announced intentions to quit smoking, writing, “I’m going to try to quit with the cigarettes starting today,” and “I haven’t made a solid effort to quit in years. I’ve always wanted to, but my god, breaking a nicotine addiction is up there for me because I’ve always found it as a wonderful stress pacifier, but yeah. I think it’s time.”
Festival Entry Issues
Deadmau5’s performance issues occurred after festival attendees reportedly faced significant challenges entering Coachella. Thousands of festival-goers reportedly endured extensive, 12-hour wait times and experienced near-record high temperatures merely to gain access to Coachella this year.
Some attendees described the entry conditions as the worst since the festival’s inception in 1999, while others drew comparisons between this year’s two-weekend event and the highly criticized Fyre Festival in 2017.
“It was truly the worst experience ever and also super disappointing because of how much money we spent to be at an event that we really loved,” one attendee expressed.
