Ecuadorian Police Arrest Suspects Following Deadly Cockfight Attack

Authorities in Ecuador have apprehended four individuals in connection with a violent assault at a cockfighting event that resulted in the deaths of 12 people. The deadly incident occurred in the rural community of La Valencia in north-western Manabí province. Law enforcement officials conducted raids on Friday, the day after the carnage, confiscating weapons and imitation police and military uniforms.

Raids and Investigation Launched After Cockfight Massacre

Video footage circulating on social media captured the harrowing moments when armed assailants stormed into the cockfighting arena and opened fire. Terrified bystanders scrambled for safety amidst the gunfire. Local media reports indicate that the perpetrators, disguised in fake military attire, were allegedly members of a criminal organization targeting rival gang members believed to be present at the cockfight.

Provincial authorities have initiated a criminal investigation to probe the incident and bring all responsible parties to justice.

Ecuador Grapples with Escalating Drug-Related Violence

Ecuador is currently contending with a surge in activity from approximately 20 criminal gangs vying for dominance over crucial drug trafficking routes. President Daniel Noboa has highlighted the nation’s unfortunate position as a major transit point, stating that roughly 70% of the world’s cocaine passes through Ecuadorian ports en route to the United States and Europe.

The illicit drugs are trafficked into Ecuador from neighboring Colombia and Peru, the world’s leading cocaine producers. The month of January witnessed a grim milestone, with 781 homicides recorded, making it the deadliest month in recent years. A significant number of these killings are linked to the illicit drug trade, underscoring the severity of the narco-violence crisis in Ecuador.
