Android Update Enhances Device Security with Automatic Reboot Feature
Smartphones hold a vast amount of personal and sensitive information, including private messages, contact details, financial data, and personal photos. Losing a phone or having it stolen can therefore be a major concern, particularly if unauthorized individuals gain access to the device’s applications and data. To address this issue, Google is implementing a significant update for Android devices, introducing an automatic restart function for phones and tablets that remain locked for 72 hours.
New Security Measure for Android Devices
As reported by 9to5Google, this enhanced security feature is integrated into the latest Google Play services update and is categorized as a “Security & Privacy” enhancement. This auto-reboot capability aims to bolster device protection in scenarios where a device is misplaced or unlawfully obtained.
Protecting Data from Unauthorized Access
If an Android phone falls into the wrong hands while unlocked, accessing personal information and applications is straightforward. Even if the device is locked with a PIN, passcode, or biometric authentication at the time of theft, methods exist to potentially bypass these security measures.
Google’s new automatic reboot feature after three days of inactivity aims to mitigate this risk. Restarting an Android device activates a security state where user data becomes significantly more difficult to access. In this state, biometric logins such as fingerprint and facial recognition are disabled, adding an extra layer of security. These biometric methods can sometimes be circumvented, raising concerns about unauthorized access.
Improved Data Encryption After Reboot
Upon rebooting, an Android device enters a state that demands a PIN, passcode, or pattern for initial unlocking. This significantly hinders unauthorized attempts to bypass security using workarounds, as direct biometric access is prevented, and gaining entry without the primary credentials becomes substantially more challenging for malicious actors.

Industry Expert on Android’s Auto-Reboot Function
Adam Boynton, Senior Security Strategy Manager EMEIA at Jamf, commented on the new Android security enhancement, stating, “Android’s new auto-reboot is a welcome security feature that mirrors Apple’s ‘inactivity reboot’.”
He further elaborated, “By transitioning Android phones and tablets into a ‘Before First Unlock’ (BFU) state, sensitive information remains encrypted, complicating efforts by cybercriminals to unlock devices or extract personal data. Furthermore, the BFU state effectively blocks access via biometric authentication methods like fingerprint or facial scanning.”
“Forcing a device into a BFU state offers superior protection compared to the conventional ‘After First Unlock’ (AFU) state if a device is lost or stolen, significantly reducing the window of vulnerability,” Boynton noted.
Google has confirmed that the rollout of this security feature will be implemented through Google Play Services. This approach ensures that a broad spectrum of users will receive the security update without needing a complete operating system upgrade. “This strategic deployment by Google is vital,” Boynton added, “as delayed device updates are a primary reason many users lack the latest security enhancements.”
Verifying Google Play Services Update
To confirm the installation of the latest Google Play Services update on your Android phone or tablet, users can check their installed version by accessing the Google Play Services app. The updated version is 25.14. If the update is not yet installed, users may have the option to manually update or await automatic updates, which are expected to roll out broadly in the near future.
