American Pastor Rescued in South Africa After Hostage Ordeal

Gqeberha, South Africa – An American pastor, kidnapped by armed individuals during a church service in South Africa last week, has been freed following a dramatic rescue operation. Authorities reported a “high-intensity shootout” that resulted in three fatalities. Josh Sullivan, 45, was recovered unharmed Tuesday evening in a township in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, the same location from which he was abducted last Thursday. Details regarding the perpetrators, suspected of being familiar with the pastor’s routine, remain under investigation. This incident occurs amidst a concerning surge in kidnappings in South Africa, with police data indicating a 264% increase over the past decade.

Swift Police Action Leads to Pastor’s Release

According to a statement released Wednesday morning by the Hawks, South Africa’s specialized police unit, Mr. Sullivan’s rescue was the result of “verified intelligence” that enabled a “coordinated team” to “move swiftly to the identified location.”

Hawks spokesperson Avele Fumba stated that as officers approached the residence, suspects attempted to escape in a vehicle and initiated gunfire.

“The officers responded with tactical precision, resulting in a high-intensity shootout where three unidentified suspects sustained fatal injuries,” Mr. Fumba confirmed.

Family’s Plea for Safe Return

Prior to his liberation, Mr. Sullivan’s family and friends had urgently appealed for his safe return following his abduction during a church service. Jeremy Hall, the Sullivan family’s spokesperson, informed local newspaper TimesLIVE that he witnessed the kidnapping at the church with his wife and children.

While initial reports suggested no ransom demand was made, the kidnappers subsequently issued a demand, which prompted the Hawks’ intervention. This elite unit within the South African Police Service specializes in probing organized crime, financial offenses, and other serious felonies.

Pastor’s Missionary Work in South Africa

Mr. Sullivan identifies himself as a “church planting missionary” on his personal website. He indicates that he relocated to South Africa with his wife and children in 2018 to establish a church focused on ministry to the Xhosa-speaking community.
