David Oyelowo’s New Series ‘Government Cheese’ Debuts on Apple TV+

Award-winning actor David Oyelowo is set to star in a highly anticipated and unconventional new series, Government Cheese, a period comedy-drama premiering on Apple TV+. This unique show marks Oyelowo’s latest television venture, promising viewers a blend of humor and poignant storytelling.

Synopsis of ‘Government Cheese’

In this quirky and endearing series, Oyelowo embodies Hampton Chambers, a small-time criminal endeavoring to rebuild his life after being released from incarceration in 1967. Determined to restore his family and turn over a new leaf, Hampton channels his energy into inventing the “Bit Magician,” a self-sharpening drill, while simultaneously pursuing a spiritual path to redemption.

However, his aspirations for a reformed life are challenged by the reappearance of his former partner in crime, Bootsy, played by Bokeem Woodbine. Bootsy, along with his eccentric family – wife Astoria (Simone Missick), and sons Harrison (Jahi Di’Allo Winston) and Einstein (Evan Alexander Ellison) – quickly begins to create complications for Hampton.

As Government Cheese garners positive early reviews leading up to its debut this Wednesday, April 16th, attention turns to its celebrated leading actor. Let’s explore aspects of David Oyelowo’s life beyond the screen.

David Oyelowo: Personal Life and Background

Family and Marriage

Their paths crossed at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. They initially made their home in Brighton before eventually moving to Los Angeles. In 2016, they became naturalized citizens of the United States.

Children

David and Jessica Oyelowo are parents to four children: Asher, Caleb, Penuel, and Zoe. Their eldest son, Asher, is pursuing a career in music and launched his debut EP, Mr. Misunderstood, in 2022.

Details regarding their other children, Caleb, Penuel, and Zoe, remain private, as the family maintains a discreet presence on social media platforms.

Faith, Diet, and Fitness

Dietary Choices

Oyelowo’s dietary choices are rooted in personal conviction and family solidarity. He adopted a pescatarian diet several years ago, a decision made in support of his late father, who was advised to eliminate meat following a diagnosis of colon cancer. Sadly, his father passed away from the illness in 2021.

“He was told to stop consuming meat,” Oyelowo recounted. “And in solidarity with him, we all stopped eating meat.”

Fitness Regime

Maintaining physical fitness is a priority for Oyelowo. He is committed to a weekday workout routine, typically starting his gym sessions around 5:30 am.

“Exercise, for me, clears my head, strengthens my body, and I believe it contributes to longevity,” he stated.

Strong Christian Faith

Faith is also a cornerstone of Oyelowo’s life. Both David and Jessica Oyelowo are devout Christians.

In an interview with Premier Christianity magazine, Oyelowo shared, “Over the past three years, I have experienced the loss of both my parents – my father very recently, in fact – and these are the kinds of events that test your faith.”

“I have often discovered that such trials have actually drawn me closer to the Lord, and further revealed the extent to which I have built my life upon the foundation of Jesus Christ.”

He has also indicated that his profound Christian beliefs have played a role in his career decisions. He felt a divine calling to portray civil rights icon Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in the critically acclaimed 2014 film Selma.

“I always knew that to embody Dr. King, I needed to have God’s spirit flow through me, because when you witness Dr. King delivering his speeches, you can see that he is operating with divine inspiration,” he explained to Sojourners.

Royal Heritage

Nigerian Prince

Beyond his celebrated acting career, Oyelowo possesses a lesser-known royal lineage, albeit not within the British monarchy. He holds the title of prince, or “omoba,” among the Yoruba people of Nigeria. His grandfather was a king in Awe, a town in Oyo State.

However, Oyelowo humorously downplayed his noble status in an interview with the Independent, stating, “It sounds significantly more grand than it is in reality. There are numerous royal families in Africa.”

He clarified: “Our perception of royalty in the UK differs greatly from royalty in Nigeria. If you were to throw a stone there, you would likely hit about 30 princes.”

“So, it’s somewhat akin to being the Prince of Islington: it might have been useful for attracting dates, but probably not much else.”
