South Africa Appoints Special Envoy to the US Amidst Bilateral Tensions
Pretoria has designated a special envoy to Washington D.C. in a bid to alleviate diplomatic tensions that have strained relations between South Africa and the United States, particularly exacerbated since Donald Trump’s resurgence on the political scene.
President Ramaphosa’s Diplomatic Initiative
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the selection of Mcebisi Jonas for this crucial role, stating that Mr. Jonas is “tasked with advancing South Africa’s diplomatic, trade and bilateral objectives.”
Mcebisi Jonas: Profile of the Special Envoy
Mr. Jonas, a former deputy finance minister, previously garnered significant attention for his courageous stance against corruption, notably making public allegations against a prominent and influential family with close associations to former President Jacob Zuma.
Recent Diplomatic Setbacks
The appointment follows the recent expulsion of South Africa’s ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, by Washington last month. This action was reportedly in response to remarks made by Mr. Rasool concerning the Trump administration, further underlining the current delicate state of US-South Africa relations.
Mandate and Responsibilities of the Special Envoy
President Ramaphosa’s office clarified that Mr. Jonas will function as the “official representative” of the President and the nation of South Africa in the United States.

Jonas’s Prior Experience and Anti-Corruption Stance
Prior to this appointment, Mr. Jonas served as one of South Africa‘s four investment envoys, a role established in 2018 to attract foreign direct investment into the country.
He initially rose to prominence during his tenure as deputy finance minister when he bravely exposed a significant corruption attempt. Mr. Jonas alleged that the wealthy Gupta family, notorious for their close affiliations with former President Zuma, offered him a substantial bribe of 600 million rand (equivalent to $31.7m or Β£24.14m) to assume the position of finance minister.
This revelation stood out amongst numerous corruption allegations directed at Mr. Zuma and the Gupta family, becoming a landmark case in the narrative of systemic corruption.
Mr. Jonas, who rejected the illicit offer and subsequently became outspoken about his resistance, indicated that this approach occurred shortly before his superior at the time, Nhlanhla Nene, was dismissed from his role by Mr. Zuma.
He stated that accepting the bribe would have entailed removing key officials from the National Treasury and leveraging his position to further the Gupta family’s “business ambitions” β a clear example of what has become widely recognized in South Africa as “state capture,” wherein private interests unduly influence state institutions.
Mr. Jonas further disclosed receiving threats to his life should he reveal details of the meeting. The Gupta family has consistently refuted these allegations, and Mr. Zuma has similarly denied all corruption accusations leveled against him.
The dismissal of Mr. Nene and his initial replacement by the relatively unknown David van Rooyen triggered a sharp decline in the value of the national currency and widespread public protests, ultimately leading to the swift appointment of a new finance minister within days.
Currently, Mr. Jonas holds the position of independent non-executive chairman at MTN Group, a multinational telecommunications corporation. President Ramaphosa affirmed that Mr. Jonas will continue in this role alongside his new responsibilities as special envoy.
Context of US-South Africa Tension
Earlier in the year, President Ramaphosa declared his intention to dispatch envoys to several nations, including the US, to articulate South Africa‘s stance on critical matters, some of which have provoked disapproval from the Trump administration and contributed to US-South Africa tensions.
Relations between the United States and South Africa, historically fluctuating, reached a notable low point earlier this year. The Trump administration curtailed aid to South Africa, citing concerns over the new Expropriation Law, which permits the government to seize land without compensation under specific conditions.
Mr. Trump recently reiterated his intention to boycott the upcoming G20 2025 Summit scheduled to take place in South Africa, explicitly referencing the contentious land policy as the primary reason.
Furthermore, Mr. Trump has publicly criticized South Africa for initiating proceedings against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip, allegations which Israel vehemently denies.
