Major Restoration Underway at Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia

ISTANBUL, Turkey – A significant restoration initiative has commenced on the dome of Hagia Sophia, according to experts. This extensive undertaking is one of the most considerable repair projects in the 1,486-year history of the iconic structure, located in Istanbul.

Historical Significance of Hagia Sophia

For nine centuries, Hagia Sophia stood as the world’s largest cathedral. Following the conquest by Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II in 1453, it transitioned into one of Islam’s most revered mosques for nearly 500 years.

More than 70 years ago, Turkey’s secular government designated the building as a museum. However, in 2020, President Tayyip Erdogan mandated its reconversion into a mosque.

Complex Restoration Process

Byzantine art historian Asnu Bilban Yalcin described the project as challenging, yet it will “initiate a vital chapter in the narrative of Hagia Sophia.” She noted that repairs to other sections of the edifice have been ongoing for a decade.

Speaking to Reuters outside Hagia Sophia, Yalcin stated, “It is indeed a structure laden with surprises, as developments can deviate from expectations. Despite meticulous planning, unforeseen issues may surface upon closer inspection.”

Protecting the Dome During Repairs

Cultural property conservation specialist Ahmet Gulec explained that the dome will initially be shielded to ensure protection throughout the repair work. Subsequently, the current lead covering will be removed to facilitate the continuation of the restoration and reinforcement endeavor.

Addressing Structural Weaknesses

The reinforcement project is designed to address vulnerable structural points identified through simulations of a major earthquake. Turkey is situated in a seismically active region.

Professor of Architecture Hasan Firat Diker from Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakif University indicated that the true extent of structural problems will become clearer once the lead cover is removed.

Hagia Sophia to Remain Open

According to Gulec, Hagia Sophia is anticipated to remain accessible to both worshippers and tourists during the course of the restoration. This factor adds complexity to the repair operations.

Uncertain Timeline for Completion

Experts did not provide a specific timeline for the dome restoration’s completion. They cited potential delays arising from weather conditions and the possibility of discovering unforeseen additional tasks as factors that could affect the schedule.
