Doctor explains why your cough won't go away – and how to treat it

Experiencing a persistent cough? You are not alone. A UK-based NHS General Practitioner, Dr. Ahmed, reports a significant number of patients presenting with an “ongoing chronic cough.”

The physician highlighted the importance of determining the underlying cause to effectively manage a cough.

“Coughing is merely a symptom stemming from numerous potential origins. In most instances, a cough arises post-infection, a consequence of inflammation following a viral illness. This inflammation can trigger a cough that lingers for weeks, or in more prolonged cases, even months,” he clarified.

According to Dr. Ahmed, another prevalent factor contributing to a continuous cough is reflux. This condition occurs when stomach acid ascends into the oesophagus, initiating the cough reflex.

He further mentioned that a cough persisting for “several months” may evolve into a habitual condition, becoming more of a “neurological reaction” than a physiological ailment.

Post-nasal drip, where sinus congestion drains down the throat and activates the cough reflex, represents another frequent cause, particularly for nighttime coughing.

Regarding cough treatment, Dr. Ahmed expressed skepticism about over-the-counter cough medications, deeming them “ineffective.” Instead, he advocated for “honey and lemon” as a remedy for individuals over one year old.

“Humidified air and consistent steam inhalation can offer substantial relief by loosening sinus congestion. Saline nasal washes and drops can also prove beneficial in alleviating inflammation associated with post-nasal drip,” he explained.

He also underscored the necessity of seeking medical consultation if symptoms persist, especially when experiencing symptoms such as “yellow, thick phlegm or blood” during coughing, chest discomfort, or breathlessness.

Dr. Ahmed clarified that his recommendations are not “exhaustive” and urged individuals who “feel unwell and have not yet sought medical evaluation” to schedule an appointment with their General Practitioner.

NHS Guidance on Coughs

Typically, a cough does not necessitate a doctor’s visit unless it is prolonged or causes concern.

Recommended Actions:

  • Rest adequately.
  • Consume ample fluids.
  • If you have a high temperature or feel unwell and unable to perform your usual activities, remain at home and limit contact with others.

Potential Remedies to Consider:

  • Paracetamol or ibuprofen can be used to alleviate any discomfort.
  • Hot lemon with honey (not suitable for infants under 12 months).
  • Pelargonium, a herbal remedy (suitable for individuals aged 12 and over).

Note that evidence supporting the effectiveness of these methods is limited. Consulting your GP is advisable if needed.
