The central theme of Expo 2025 is “Creating a future society for our lives.” This marks Osaka’s second time hosting the Expo, following the monumental success of the 1970 event. That earlier exposition drew 64 million attendees, setting a record that stood until Shanghai hosted the Expo in 2010.
Organizers project 28 million visitors will attend during its run until mid-October. However, advance ticket sales have been slower than initially hoped, with approximately 9 million sold, falling short of the initial target of 14 million.
“It’s been 55 years since the last Expo in Osaka. I’ve been anticipating this,” remarked Daiki Chiba, who traveled from Sendai, roughly 900 kilometers (560 miles) northeast of Osaka, to experience the event.

Sachiko Yoshimura, head of Expo 2025 global communications, suggests that the current global climate may present an opportune moment for such an event. “Holding the Expo now could ultimately contribute to bridging global divides,” Yoshimura stated. “I am optimistic that this Expo in Japan has the potential to foster stronger international relations and drive positive change.”
Key Features of the Expo
The Grand Ring: An Architectural Marvel
A prominent feature of the Osaka World Expo is the Grand Ring, an iconic lattice-like structure designed by architect Sou Fujimoto. This ring, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest wooden architecture, encircles the Expo venue. It stands 20 meters (65 feet) tall and has a circumference of 2 kilometers (1.2 miles).
The Grand Ring represents a substantial portion of the Expo’s total budget of 235 billion yen ($1.64 billion), accounting for over 14% of expenditures. Its significant cost has drawn public scrutiny.
The overall Expo expenses nearly doubled from initial projections, largely due to fluctuations in currency exchange rates and construction delays. Consequently, several national pavilions, including those of Nepal, India, Vietnam, and Chile, were not completed for the opening day.
The Grand Ring is intended to be partially reusable, aligning with the Expo’s overarching theme of promoting a sustainable future.
Other Notable Attractions
Expo 2025 Osaka showcases a wide array of attractions. Exhibits featuring advanced technology, such as robots and concepts for flying cars, are prominent. Japanese pop culture icons like Hello Kitty and Gundam are also featured, adding to the diverse appeal.
Laurel Sylvester, a visitor from New Zealand, accompanied by her family, commented, “Pavilions all look amazing.” Her family, with an interest in ocean sustainability, planned to visit the Blue Ocean Dome. She added that her children were particularly excited to see the large Gundam robot and explore the various technological displays.
Within the Japanese health care pavilion, a miniature artificial heart, created using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS), was displayed, demonstrating a heartbeat. The Future of Life pavilion offers interactive experiences with robots. A human washing machine, originally a sensation at the 1970 Expo, has been reimagined with modern technology and is on display.
The U.S. pavilion centers on the theme of space exploration. It features a lunar rock retrieved during the Apollo 12 mission, reprising its popular display from the 1970 Expo.
China’s pavilion also emphasizes space technology, exhibiting soil samples collected from its lunar missions.
Meet Myaku-Myaku: The Expo Mascot
Myaku-Myaku, the official mascot of Expo 2025, greets visitors with its distinctive appearance. This enigmatic and cheerful creature features a blue face and is adorned with red spheres, some resembling eyeballs.
According to organizers, Myaku-Myaku is an imaginary being born from the combination of cells and water from a small spring in the Kansai region. This affable and adaptable character can morph into different forms and is said to have a knack for finding rainbows after rain.
